Windows XP wallpaper preferences

#1 Post by UMPC2024 » Thu Oct 08, 2020 10:07 pm

Starting a new topic so as to not to jack RBS' Windows 2004 thread like I had accidentally jacked the COVID talks into guns (my bad!) :jhem:

As green as the grass in the Windows XP field?
I do confirm it is even more green than the winxp field
Lol, sounds great. I'm working on going to the Linux side. Probably will slap on Bliss as my first wallpaper just for laughs.

I never really liked "Bliss" that much. When I didn't feel like a custom wallpaper, I used "Ascent" or "Azul", sometimes "Crystal".
My favorite was the refreshed version of Bliss in the 2005 Windows XP Media Center edition. They came out with a new theme that was more rounded and "electric" in a way. I think it was called Energy Bliss. I also liked the ones you listed. I can't remember all the names, but I also used the space one. I've saved the default XP collection on my backup hard drive and sometimes load them up for nostalgia.

In terms of themes I liked the "Home Depot" one that was orange and black but also "electric" like the media center theme. It actually has a different name but is colloquially called Home Depot because that brand of stores adopted it as their official theme for their workstations back in the 2005-2007. Despite green being my favorite color, I couldn't do the olive green theme just because I'm not into that particular shade and it didn't seem to suit XP for me.

I don't think I've ever seen "Energy Bliss" before. Looked it up now and it's quite nice indeed. It is mostly single color, which I find better than multi-color wallpapers like the original "Bliss", and easier on the eyes.

My favorite stock Windows wallpaper through is Vista Ultimate Strands or derivatives thereof. Overall, I find Vista's visual themes slightly ahead those of Win7 in terms of aesthetics, and both are miles ahead of any other Windows version, before or after.

I normally use a photo for desktop backgrounds on my systems. The one exception is my A31p with an IBM A31p modified desktop background.

I was never really crazy about any Windows background that came with the OS.

Yeah the Windows XP Media Center 2005 edition was a pretty weird release because it was right before the Vista release. I think very few products actually had it. I had it preloaded on my first personal computer, the Sony VAIO AR series. A 17" behemoth back when desktop replacements were popular. Battery life lasted an hour new.

I don't know the story behind Energy Bliss. It could be a digitally altered version just to fit into the theme or it could be an actual photo like the original Bliss. The field is a little lower and the blues blend together well with the sky and the blue of the taskbar.

I thought I was the only one that thought Vista themes were better. Glad to see I'm not the only one. Ah, Vista, brings back memories of going over the latest PCMag and PCWorld in actual magazines and the original Microsoft Surface. I was always creeped out by the hallucinogenic type "Characters" and "Scenes" theme packs that come with Windows 7. They just seem so out of place with a tradition of landscapes. Not a big fan of the default Windows 8.1 one that's yellow tesselating triangles because it doesn't make me think of "Windows" like the Vista strands did. I think the worst Windows themes goes to Windows 10 themes are pretty weird since the recycle bin icon seems super 90s and doesn't fit in the progression of the icon from XP to 8.1.

I've got different backgrounds and types for different systems just to distinguish between them. My T430 daily driver is always variations of IBM/Lenovo/ThinkPad/Think products just because I like the matching branding and they're easy on the eyes.

I use photo backgrounds from Unsplash for the T420 that I use for watching DVDs and YouTube. The T410 is now a museum piece that I only boot up once in a while and have the stock Windows Vista and Windows 7 ones on the dualboot. Random ones on the T510, T400, X220t that my parents decided to just start using since their consumer grade PCs all decided to die off. Solid grey on the Windows 10 computer at work just because I keep so much stuff on the desktop that I need it to be simple.

Yeah, I like to fool around and mess with people. When Windows 10 first came out, I would change the lock screen wallpapers on the school computers to the blue screen of death because IT didn't think things through and just jumped on the Windows 10 bandwagon which led to repeated crashing. The thing was they only had Windows 7 Enterprise for a year because it took them so long to upgrade from XP. Nobody ever figured out it was me.

I used to troll my Mac friends by downloading the default wallpaper for the latest Mac OS X/mac OS release on the new release week. They aren't computer people so they were freaking out. Wait until they see the hacked ThinkPads that actually do run Mac OS X/mac OS! Sadly they all bought newer ThinkPads that have more Apple styling and then start getting in my face about how ThinkPads are the best thing ever despite me having one way before them.

I do like Windows 10's landscape background where it can give you changing pictures from various vistas (LOL) around the world; however, the overall theme just doesn't look so good ever since they made everything square and flat in Win8.1 + the inconsistencies between the classic desktop and the modern UI.

I suppose the reason they went with the square flat desktop window UI since 8.1 is because of that Modern UI, which is inherently flat. If they retained the classic desktop looks of Vista/7, the contrast between the two would be even higher, to the point of being cringe-inducing.

One ridiculous change they did with Windows 10 was to keep the color of the title bar the same whether it's the active window or not-- the only difference being the title text was greyed-out on inactive windows. This is much harder to spot, and on more than one occasion I've closed the wrong window via Alt-F4 because I wasn't able to distinguish which window was the active one.

It's slightly lighter, but almost indistinguishably so with the default settings. In any case, it can be changed, and you can even achieve totally different colors for active and inactive windows via a manual registry edit. Description here:

Lol, I just realized my original sentence doesn't flow like it should. Oh well, I guess that's what I get for replying after a long week.
Yeah, I think the landscapes are also the same on Bing.com. I used to go and do screenshots of it everyday when it was Windows Live Search and I had set website as wallpaper for a while in XP.

I've got dark mode on, so it's just variations of black, lol. I too have closed windows accidentally. I do wish they kept the classic theme in because at least you can see the indent for the active window instead of just some blue (or whatever color accent you have) stripe at the bottom.
