Sony Vaio LCD flickering

#1 Post by ThinkPad560X » Mon Jun 14, 2021 5:33 pm

I got a nice clean Sony Vaio tower model PCV-RS422 and the LCD is a Sony 18" SDM-M81. The screen didn't come with a AC Adapter and uses that 4 pin female adapter plug that the ThinkPad 755 era models used. I have a ThinkPad 760 one and using it, It outputs 20V-10V I just ordered a official Sony 18v Ac adapter now. When I have the screen plugged in VGA or DVI it will come on then start to flicker. cables are fine as they are used off my IBM LCD screen. It displays the picture fine just keeps flickering and you can hear a flick sound but that maybe the built in speakers on the screen. I don't know if it is the AC Adapter do it or not.

I took the screen apart and checked everything. It seems ok and the caps on the power board and lcd inverter are good. The click sound is the back light coming on and off. So don't know if this IBM AC Adapter is too much power for it or the LCD light is going bad.

You probably wanna try replugging the inverter, its cable as well as the CCFL connector.
Also see if cranking the brightness to the maximum and minimum have any effects.
Moreover, try to observe if any red hue or uneven backlighting occur.
It can be a cold solder joint on the CCFL tube itself, but that probability is usually low, unless the LCD had pest infestation and one bug chomped on the CCFL cable (which happened to a Toshiba that my friend owns)

Well I got the AC Adapter in today OEM Sony 18v and the screen isn't flickering now. So it had to be the right AC Adapter. The adapter was hard to find and was the only one on ebay at the time. I don't like to buy cheap knock off ac adapter either. But there wasn't any of this plug type as well. So I got lucky finding this.

I guess I can put it back together now.
