Bluetooth adapter on scanner - crazy?

#1 Post by Franasia » Tue Jun 29, 2004 7:56 pm

Hi all,

I'm about to get a Visioneer Strobe XP 450 PDF Scanner that has USB 2.0.
I was thinking of a way to turn it into Bluetooth so it would transmit to a T40 w/BT. Would a USB BT Adapter on the scanner work, or am I crazy? Or should I try WiFi instead? and if so, how?

Would appreciate any help. Thanks much.

well ya got a problem here, there is no bluetooth abstraction layer for a scanner specifically. Now however there is a layer for serial communications. However I have never seen a serial scanner outside a USB scanner, another problem being that I have never seen an adaptor designed to turn a usb device into a bluetooth device. Now you could pick up a bluetooth sdk kit and go hog wild, but beyond the immense cost, blueooth is slow as hell and not designed for this kind of trasnfer work.

So in short. No

Thanks Qapf,

I have the scanner on order and should be receiving it Monday or Tuesday.
I'm going to try with a USB BT adaptor first to see what happens. It would have to be paired with one machine only, otherewise all machines would be getting the same scan, I think.

I think WiFi will be the way to go eventually. Will post my experience.

Thanks

I don't know if you truely understood what I said, so I am going to clarify.

You can not, in any way shape or form, put a scanner onto a bluetooth USB dongle and have it function.

As of today, there is no scanner made that can in any way shape or form be put onto a bluetooth connection.

I do not believe there is a solution out there. There are Wifi access points that come with an USB port, but I believe they support printers and HDs only.

As far as I know there is no solution that allows a scanner to be hooked up as a network device and used by any device in the network. You are just going to have to get a USB cable to your pc

there are solutions on the horizon for generic usb proxying, but can't talk about them.

You could get an HP PSC 2510 all-in-one. It has built in 802.11B (WIFI), and you can print, scan, and fax wirelessly. I have one, and it works very well (although it's software is a bit bulky). Even cooler, the printer has a built in web server (much like a router's set up page) that allows for configuration and you can scan without a driver installation, just from that page. Very neat!
