Which Graphic Cards for Adobe Photoshop, 3dMax Studio?

#1 Post by jlingo » Sun Oct 16, 2005 11:00 pm

I'm sorry but I got confused with so many graphic cards on the market now.
Basically if I do alot of coreldraw design, photoshop, and 3dmax studio, which graphic cards would help me accelerate my work? or graphic cards is strictly for gaming and won't do me any good for this kind of work? I got confused with FireGL, Quadro?

Thanks

Don't know if 3dmax makes use of the card for rendering or not, but Corel and Photoshop will work with whatever you want. They don't need anything beyond a basic video card (integrated would work fine).
X31, T43p (on sale soon I think :( ), T400

For 3DS max, you may want a nice current video card but for Photoshop and Corel, anything that can display 24bit color or better at whichever resolution you are most comfortable with, you should be fine. Since Photoshop is a 2D application, it really doesnt tax the video card as much as it does the CPU, RAM and hard drive. I even have Photoshop running on my ThinkPad 760ED that has Trident 9385 video chipset with 2mb video RAM and on my 380ED which has a NeoMagic 128ZV chipset with 1mb RAM.

Latitude E7250: i5 5300U 2.3ghz, 12gb RAM, 12" 1080p touch, 256gb SSD, Win 10

3dmax doesn't use video card for rendering but it uses it when you're modelling and setting up the scene. And it's not really pleasant to do this without a fast card.

If you're doing pre-press, you'd probably want 32-bit color depth... does your LCD support that? Also, you need a card that has software/drivers which allow for color calibration. I'm not sure that the "gaming" cards come with this??? I personally would stick with a card or brand designed for graphics work. You will find that the color accuracy, text sharpness and software support will be a much better fit for your needs. I've seen professional graphic artists try to use gaming cards, and they were not pleased with them.
