The Holocaust took place almost sixty years ago. It was a terrible, terrible blight upon the history of our planet, and will never be forgotten. Never. Remember, though, that we're talking about the political party behind the Holocaust, not the Holocaust itself.

When the writers of Seinfeld coined the term "soup nazi," I'm quite sure that they had considered the ramifications of the term and the culture into which they were about to broadcast the term. If *nobody* complained ten years ago, why should you?

It's no longer an epithet; like it or not, "soup nazi" is a joke, a cultural artefact. Words evolve, and meaning changes over the years. Just look at the development of the word "queer." While I might be overstating this somewhat, I'm just pointing out that most people who have posted in this thread do not find the term "soup nazi" to be offensive. You think that people are being insensitive - well, I think you're being a bit oversensitive.

One more factoid: Jerry Seinfeld, the creator of the show and writer, is Jewish. If he (as director) could use the term "soup nazi" ten years ago, then why can't it be used today?

I'll make one more comment, then bow out.

I do not watch Seinfeld, or TV for that matter. I avoid popular culture to the extent possible. The fact that even one member of the Forum finds the epithet offensive (and I find it just as bad as being called a "kike") should be enough. If someone called me a "nazi" to my face, they'd quickly find themselves picking up their teeth. And the "to their face" test is a good one to use online - if you wouldn't say it to their face, you shouldn't say it here.

I have politely stated my objections to the term, and asked that it not be used casually here even though a famous person (who, by the way, has nothing to do with the Forum that I'm aware of) has used it with apparent impunity. I don't care if he's Jewish or not, or if he finds it offensive or not. *I* am Jewish, I find it an extremely offensive term, and would rather not see it enter common usage here for members to employ whenever they're annoyed with one another. Thank you.

Txiasaeia wrote:...Remember, though, that we're talking about the political party behind the Holocaust, not the Holocaust itself.
Yes, we're talking about the party responsible for untold, unspeakable cruelty.
...If *nobody* complained ten years ago, why should you?
Well, and how would you know that *nobody* was offended 10 years ago?
...I'm just pointing out that most people who have posted in this thread do not find the term "soup nazi" to be offensive.
And how would you know that most readers of the comment were not offended? We did not start out using the "soup nazi" term, we started out with the "bandwidth nazi" term, which in no way applies to Seinfield. I've been a Seinfeld fan for years, and when I see the term "nazi" appended to a word or phrase to describe someone, I don't automatically think "Oh, it's okay, it must be a Seinfeld joke...".
One more factoid: Jerry Seinfeld, the creator of the show and writer, is Jewish. If he (as director) could use the term "soup nazi" ten years ago, then why can't it be used today?
Well just because a Jew said it does not mean all Jews (or anyone else for that matter) should accept it.

Also, keep in mind that this is a fact, not a factoid. Factoid - something resembling a fact; unverified (often invented) information that is given credibility because it appeared in print.

Enough said...Let's get back to Thinkpads. I for one am done with this thread. Thank you.

If one person feels offended for one comment, that for me it is more than enough to try to avoid the comment in the future.
On the other hand, I don’t think any of the posters here meant anything bad or tried to hurt anyone with that potential insensitive connotation. If in doubt, send a private message to its creator asking for the meaning. In any case, I doubt they deserve the form of public humiliation displayed.

Finally, talking about insensitivity, it is also insensitive to make your statement and then end with an “I for one am done with this thread” or “I'll make one more comment, then bow out” without giving a change for clarification.

By the way, these are my set of the screens I see every day on my ThinkPad:
- This is the IBM logo screen on my A20p. I still remember the first time I saw it... I felt in love them! (By the way, I don't like the T42p one)
http://sitemaker.umich.edu/edelrc/files/boot.jpg (40kb pic)
- This is the Boot screen that comes right after the IBM logo. It is for European audiences.
http://sitemaker.umich.edu/edelrc/files/europol.jpg (47kb pic)
- Ok, Ok, here we have one for the US audiences...
http://sitemaker.umich.edu/edelrc/files/fbi.jpg (74kb pic)
- Finally, this is my desktop costumized.

A great site for both backgrounds and themes is www.customize.org. Really talented folks there. They've also got icon suites, all sorts of skins for apps like Rainlendar and IM apps, etc. Something for everybody :)

"Bandwidth nazi" is a riff of "soup nazi." I dunno what it is about the term, but I've used it in various incarnations over the years ("greek nazi" for this one owner of a greek restaurant who refused to let me park near his restaurant, despite the fact that I was eating next door, etc. etc.) and it's instantly recognisable for a Seinfeldism. I actually thought about using it in one of my posts in this thread, but I didn't, if that says anything. While I didn't use it, I really don't think it's offensive by any stretch.

Anyway. If Deb had just PM'd the guy who said it originally, I'm sure he would have changed it; for that matter, if Nonny had PM's a poster who included a picture in his post, they (including me) would edit their post fairly quickly. Instead, Nonny obviously PM'd a mod, who edited the guy's post for him. If Bill wants to make it a rule to not include pics in posts, well, fine, it's not like I put pictures in my own posts anyway. But if he doesn't, I really think that Nonny should drop the whole "Don't use pictures!" post *every* time a picture is included in a post.

Okay, DONE. Rant over. But yeah, customize.org. Great stuff - I'm using a style xp theme called "ChosenOS" which is very clean and sharp, like a more stylised version of Luna Grey that comes with WinXP. I'm also using an app called YzDock that has my most-used programs in one bar, as well as a calendar and a button for restart and shutdown. I hate using the Start menu; I'd rather just click once and launch Word than clicking on the button, scrolling up, heading to Microsoft Office, etc. etc. I also like to keep my desktop clear of icons so I can enjoy my wall paper. I'd post a screenshot, but I don't have anywhere to host it.[/img]

what delightful screen shots..

all you guys are spending a lot of time at your computers makeing this stuff..

and i thought i was smart when i grabbed a still shot from finding nemo and use it as wallpaper..

ok, on to more serious comments..

AFAIK there are and or should be no words that are banned..
anywhere or anytime..
and if anyone is offended, then a quiet personal message would be more appropriate..

I just do not like censorship in any way and i find politically correct speech to be offensive..
offensive because it muzzels free speech..
so there you are..
on the one hand, words can hurt and offend..
and on the other hand being muzzeled and not allowed to speak is offensive..
now, that said, it is a fact that words DO have the power to be offensive..
and hurt..

so, the problem is NOW WHAT..

lets just say that anything is open to comment and i will not censor..
and let us take words in the context and spirit they are presented..
and one more thing, lets all be courteous to each other..
which i am sure we all intend in the first place..

NOW, please tell me how some of you do some of those neat desktops.. :D

They should be safe. I regularly run ad-aware and have yet to find anything after installing a theme.

I had quite a few people interested in the World Time IBM Desktop (See http://sitemaker.umich.edu/edelrc/files ... lpaper.jpg 93kb), and I have been referred them to the IBM page http://www.pc.ibm.com/ww/thinkpad/commu ... nload.html. However, this page, as many other IBM pages, are not working since a month ago. I think it will be up any time soon.

But till that time comes, you can get my only copy that I have. This is for the 1400x1050 screen and with Europe in the center. The cities are the default ones and also has an small IBM logo:
http://sitemaker.umich.edu/edelrc/files ... lpaper.zip 152kb
And here is the screensaver:
http://sitemaker.umich.edu/edelrc/files ... nsaver.zip 306kb

(Remember that you can custumize the cities that you want and as many as you desire... it just need some html work!)

I've been running various themes for the past two or so years and have yet to come across a problem.

StyleXP uses Windows XP's own skinning engine to render these themes; it's like putting a faceplate on a cell phone. The cell phone works the same but it works differently.

edelrc - thanks again for the files. However, I was playing around with the html of that time zone map and I couldn't seem to be able to add a city - its pretty complicated for my sparse knowledge of javascript! Did the original come with any kind of readme for the customization of the file? Or is it just setup as so and you're on your own for modification?

No, no help files were ever available. I would wait a few days for IBM to repair the page.
Mostly, i.e. San Francisco is Clock1, so if you want it to be LA, change coordenades "47px; top: 471px" to "50px; top: 482px" or so... With DreamWeaver, you do not even need to change coordenates!

However, if you still want a city added or those posted changed, send me a PM and I would do that for you!

Greetings!

It appears that they have included files for a resolution of 1400x1280......it doesnt fit on my SXGA+!! I don't think i can shrink the image, because then all the coordinates would be messed up....any ideas here?

Yes, now I remember that IBM only give us the 1400x1280 resolution.
This is what I would do so:
-Crop the 1400_xxx.jpg image inside the 'opt' folder. Crop it to 1400x1050 (take out the a section of the blank bands both at the top and button of the picture).

-Then change all the references to 1280 into 1050 in the 1400x1280_xxx.html code.

-Finally, you have to reajust the coordenates of the cities. Take this as a change to put the cities that you want too. With Dreamweaver or similar, this is easy to do.

PM me if you need help!

Have to admit I'm a bit fond of Black - so I chose a black theme, and a very dark bureau...this is what I came up with.

Edit: My ISP is dying...if it doesn't display, hit 'refresh'...

Works every time for me - a little hint, if you have to write procedures, as I do, and you need to get a screenshot of a menu box, for instance - click 'Alt' and 'Prt Scr' at the same time - saves a hell of a lot of mucking about cutting off all the background gumf afterwards - all you get copied is the menu box.

Alt + PrtSc will copy the active window to the clipboard.
Ctrl + PrtSc will copy the entire screen to the clipboard.
Ctrl + V will paste the image into your favorite image editing app like photoshop or paint shop pro.

to save everything, hit Ctrl + Alt + Delete twice.
