Anti-MS Group Aims to Block Vista
Kind of a Twilight ZonE kind of article, but interesting.
http://www.betanews.com/article/AntiMS_ ... 1123614377
Not very likely, but the point is valid.

Support Non-Win OS's?
Instead of tyring to block Vista, why could they not suport non-win os's? There is ReactOS , eComStation http://www.ecomstation.com , FreeDOS http://www.freedos.org , and others at http://tomleem.homestead.com/pcos.html .

Because this isn't a matter of helping the people, this is a matter of special interests.
Personally, I think this is silly. Remember what people said about Windows 95 in 1995? It took too much RAM, my computer was too slow, etc. Contrast to the high regard Windows 95 has now, today 95 is one of the best and pmost popular OSs made. Windows XP: In 2001, people would not shut up about the bloat, today it's on almost every desktop.
For the most part, these people just want attention and really like to nag, that's really what this all comes down to.

Getting attention!
They are certainly getting the attention.
If one buys a computer, there is little choice in operating systems; its take Windows (the latest version) or don't buy the computer.

Re: Getting attention!
Well, you can build your own computer or for those who prefer not to build their own, there are tons of local computer shops all around that will custom build one for you and both solutions usually (but not always) give you a more powerful and/or expandable system at it's price than the big brand names do. However, the trade-off with building your own or going to a local computer shop is the lack of support that the big brands give. Support and warranty will mean more to some users than others.BigWarpGuy wrote:They are certainly getting the attention.

The only real area of constriction with operating systems would be the laptops as there really aren't any custom builders since there is still no such thing as standardized laptop parts outside of RAM and hard disk.

I really hope that some day there will be a competitor for MS, Bill Gates is way beyond recouping his r&d time and money.
You make a good point, but it seems as though some people are more obsessed with MS bashing than actually coming up with a solution. I would venture to say that the same people who spend a lot of energy complaining and bashing microsoft run XP on their work and home computers. When somone comes out with an OS that will seamlessly work with Windows and Windows related software there will be a lot of people trying it out.Instead of tyring to block Vista, why could they not suport non-win os's?

This is absolutely true, in my networking job I go to several customer sites a day of varying sizes (anywhere from 4 pc's to hundreds) in a solid month I may see a few mac's or a few novell, but hands down it is Windows, windows runs the software that people use, I don't necessarily think they believe it is such a superior OS, most people just have never tried any other OS and don't want to take the time to learn one.Windows XP: In 2001, people would not shut up about the bloat, today it's on almost every desktop.

Here is my view on OS's and bugs!
1st - Like anything else, trial and error
2nd - Find out WHAT it takes to make an OS possible, once you understand the concept; that it is even a miracle that everything seems to work ok...then make an opinion
3rd - Linux is NOT BUG free...they seem to have AS MANY or MORE then XP ( I love SuSe 10...and have used other distros) and NO OS is; some keep the bugs quieter then others.
I remember when I purchased Win95 (beta release 4?) for $35 from microsoft....what a PITA! For every 60 minutes of uptime I spent 3 hrs reloading the OS; it would BLUE SCREEN all the time!!!
For me, Microsoft's best OS (the one that made you appreciate windows) was 2000!!! HANDS DOWN...!
WORST-GUI based OS- from Microsoft...ME! I own several copies of windows (95, 98, 98SE, 2000, XP Pro, XP home) except ONE! Me...what a POS!! The 95 beta release that I purchased from Microsoft was better AND cheaper then the Me stuff they came up with. I still believe that everyone that got a copy of that OS should receive a free upgrade.
Linux OS's have made HUGE strides, in a relative short amount of time...SuSe 10 is by far the best!
And they all make mistakes! When SuSe 9 was out, the OS was free; but you had to get a "subscription" to update the bugs...NOT even Microsoft was that stupid!! Worst mistake from Microsoft was removing msconfig from Win2K(IMHO) and coming out with Me (we covered that one).
In short, NO OS will ever be 100% bug free! No one would make a DIME!

Oddly enough, I've never had any trouble with Windows ME and the only complaints I can ever get out of my friends is the crippled DOS support but since I've really outgrown software that's actually old enough to require real-mode DOS, that was never an issue. The system restore function in WinME was a life saver at some points so at this point, my compliments actually outweigh my complaints.
As for bugs and errors, every single OS out there has them, or at least every OS advanced enough to compete in todays marketplace. It's really a matter of how many people there are to discover them. I remember how when Firefox was finally getting real popular, bugs started getting discovered. MacOS probably has alot of bugs and possible exploits but there's just not as many people to discover them. If you go into an auto-shop today, you'll probably see a Mercedes SEL before seeing a Ford Pinto for this same reason. The Ford Pinto was a total flop thanks to a major and catastrophic and sometimes fatal design flaw but you will still be less likely to find one in the shop because there are much, much more Mercedes in circulation. The one factor that gets butchered the most in these product statistics is the numbers as the number of users and the demographics of the userbase is almost never considered.
This argument is not supposed to defend Windows, but I am hoping to get some of the people who's entire lives revovle around bashing Microsoft and Windows to shut up, for five minutes at least.
