Interesting that it requires 2 USB ports. I have an external drive roughly the same size as that enclosure and it is powered by the USB port, but only requires one USB connection. I wonder why the IBM enclosure would require two?

It doesn't necessarily require two, it's just that some HDs can't get sufficient amperage from one USB port to spinup. Hence the ability to conect to two ports, or one USB port and the PS2 port, is a good thing.

I have several of these generic "OEM" external cases, all of which have either "IBM Thinkpad" or "IBM Travelstar" printed on them. They all work just fine with any HD I've put in them.

This seems authentic from the website, but I haven't been able to find the same product elsewhere on the Internet.
Authentic? huh, just as much as any recnet ThinkPad is IBM. Well, I found this.
May consider to get one, looks nice IMO. Anyone had any experience with that unit.

It looks as if your link redirects me back to the home page of Lenovo Products. How did you find it?

Yes it's seems that was moved, found it again here for 80GB model and here for 40GB.

It's not that hard to find it, navigate Products > Accessories & upgrades > Storage and then second page of storage listings, huh sounds more complicated than it is.

I got the USB enclosure from fifthunit today, and it is a genuine IBM part. It came in a sealed IBM box, with a manual and the recovery disc and an authentic case for the enclosure. It has the same matte finish as the LCD cover, and comes with 2 USB cables (one for power if needed and one for data transfer). It works fine with a Hitachi 5400 rpm HDD I bought off the forum.
Now: T60 2613-EKU | T23 2647-9NU | 600X 2645-9FU | HP 100LX
Past: X31 2673-Y13 | T41 2374-3HU | T22 2647-AEU

Rules of the road :thumbs-UP:

I've also gotten the IBM enclosure from fifthunit. It seems I barely made it in time to buy it, as fifthunit.com doesn't exist anymore right after I bought and received mine.

Why would they have to be from IBM?
I bought one my aluminum enclosures with 'IBM' stamped across it for exactly GBP 0.01 + shipping from an eBayer in Hong Kong.
And I bought an identical one INCLUDING a brand new 30GB Hitachi HD for US$ 12.99 + shipping, also from an eBayer in Hong Kong.
Both are USB2.0, came with probably/definitely fake IBM stamped across (one case is silver, the other blue), both had a driver mini-CD, a 'forked' USB cable and a cover/sleeve.

Best of all, both work like a charm!

Well, the aluminum ones I've seen like that are certainly fake, but this black one with the IBM box could still yet be real.
