Recommendations for an older Mac laptop???

#1 Post by tfflivemb2 » Sun Jan 29, 2006 1:24 pm

Anyone out there that can give me a recommendation on an Apple laptop for a friend of my Aunt?

She currently has a G4 with Tiger OS on it, that is about 2 years old. She wants a laptop that is a little older than that for her kids to be able to surf the web and use some of her programs for homework. (Not enough room for a desktop)

Since I am not that "up to date" on Macs, I'm hoping that someone could give me a little direction with her request. I know that she doesn't have much money, as she is recently divorced from an idiot that is not holding up on his end of their agreement (ie. alimony and helping buy a computer).

Unforunately, I wasn't even able to get a spending limit out of her, because she doesn't know what something like this would cost.

After I get some clarification on what might fall into this realm, I might post a "Wanted" ad. However, as of right now, she is not even close, as she is going to have to save up for it.

Go to www.lowendmac.com and they have an entire database of specs and they have reviews for almost every computer made. My personal reccoemndation if this laptop will be for the kids would be the PowerBook G3 "Pismo" because it's powerful enough to run some versions of Mac OS X (before Tiger) and the aunt will be able to use it when she needs to but at the same time it's old enough that if the kids break it, the loss will be sustainable. Another notable aspect is the formfactor. Some regard the PowerBook G3 formfactor as being one of Apple's best designs. I think it is almost safe to call the PowerBook G3 "Pismo" the Apple equivalent to the ThinkPad 600 series.

Specs and small review of the Pismo:

ThinkPad T60: 2GHZ CD T2500, 3gb RAM, 14.1" XGA, 60gb 7k100, Win 7 Ult
Latitude E7250: i5 5300U 2.3ghz, 12gb RAM, 12" 1080p touch, 256gb SSD, Win 10

Alpha...thanks for the link.

I took a look at the one that you suggested, it seems nice. I also saw the G4s that are about 800mhz, released in 2002.

I didn't realize that they had sooo many different models.

Are there alot of minimum requirements for a processor above 500mhz?

Processor speed is less important with macs, I had a Pismo upgraded to a g4 and it was a great machine, built better than the Ibooks never had a problem, expansion bays which the newer books don't have. Can't go wrong with a Pismo.

If it doesn't get better, it will get over.
