Why would one wait so long for a Laptop?

#1 Post by DataAve » Sat Feb 04, 2006 6:38 pm

I just ordered a Lenovo ThinkPad Z60m 2529 - Pentium M 760 2 GHz - 15.4" TFT (Model 2529E9U). When all was said and done, $2,356.80. It's ship date (estimated) is 02/13/06 and I ordered on 01/28/06.

I must be quite honest, if it isn't at my door by the 13th; I am canceling my order and bringing my business elsewhere. Is owning a Lenovo that important, to me? NO. I will just go back to my old reliable, an HP. From what I have been reading 'around town', it is seems to be Lenovo's standard practice to take money and delay orders. It sounds as if my first experience with a ThinkPad is going to be a nightmare.

Has anyone here received an order on the day (or around the day) it was ordered?

Getting an order on the same day? That is pretty difficult to do unless you go to the store and get it yourself ;) ; the most I have ever waited is 2 Weeks. I had to get my T43 to replace another system, a badly failing and shoddy HP, as well as some extra accessories...The last accessory came in just under 2 weeks from intial purchase; the same goes for all my friends who have ordered Thinkpads and accessories.

And what is "Around Town?" Various experiences have been posted here by users who have waited for their Z Series systems. I haven't heard of IBM/Lenovo taking your money and letting a shipment rot; that serves no purpose.

I said that? What really peturbed me was that, "is it okay to ship as parts come in"? Sure, I replied, would you buy my car and I will send you the motor and the tires later! I would put my HP's and Compaq's up against any Lappy. Have you've seen the latest from HP? Not bad...alot of Fortune 500 Companies here in NYC are going over to HP (just an observation). I am not pushing HP's. I am just looking to get a Durable Lappy to do some programming of security equipment and some WiFi.

One more thing, it is called Think EXPRESS Program. What does that mean (express)? Okay, one item, the dual AC/DC Charger moved ship date from 2/15 to 3/15, I canceled that. I will keep all apprised.

I appologize, christopher_wolf, I meant to state, get an order on the day it said it was to be shipped, not the same day ordered.

Update:
Your order has left our fulfillment center. Use the track shipment button for information about the carrier and your tracking number. Your delivery date will be determined by the ship date and the shipping method you selected at checkout. Actual delivery times may vary.
Looking forward to it.
Hope this is correct.

My experience has been whether it was Levono or IBM - the delays in getting a laptop were about the same. Especially for the higher end.

Lenovo gives out very long estimated shipping dates, mine came out to almost 2 month, however they tend to ship most orders well before that time. IBM seemed to have a more consitent pattern on setting delivery dates, but in all it took about the same time.

If you order the best, you wait. Like others have mentioned you will likely get the unit ahead of time.

hahahahahahahaahahahahahaha

*gasps for air*

No chance in hell you are getting it ahead of schedule. IBM releases laptops on a schedule like this. Annouce the line for sale month 1. Get laptops to reviewers possibly month 3-4. Let orders be placed on laptops, but not even think about shipping till month 5-7, while each week giving a new excuse of why the laptops have not been shipped yet.

For me I am just holding out because I will lose my mind if I cancel, and it "supposedly" was supposed to ship the next day.

True. I think he meant ahead of the promise date. Which would make sense. Underpromise - overdeliver routine. The debate seems to be about levono overpromising - underdelivering.

BTW - 6 volvos? What did the first one not work? :) Just ribbing you!

I have yet to receive any laptop from IBM ever. Also, my main/first z60m order has been "packing" for a month now. The only thing I do have is a stick of ram IBM shipped me, but no stinking laptop to install it in :(

Yea, I called and suddenly the order moved from backordered to "packing", only problem though is that it has now been "packing" for 4 weeks.

Order placed January 28 and ship date Feb 13. This status update page from IBM is confusing and has changed at least 8 times since I ordered.
http://www.cctvforums.com/ibm/lenovo.gif
and the order status at UPS (just the AC/DC adapter) I don't understand this one.
http://www.cctvforums.com/ibm/lenovo2.gif

UPS says the memory will be delivered tomorrow.
Look at the total amount, note the math.

Stay tuned

Mine is still "packing" as of right now (ordered 12/25), ship date is 2/806 (today) but I doubt it will ship out today, and probably be bumped to August for all I could care right now. This is like waiting for a rebate from a scummy company that takes forever. I have almost lost all the feeling of happiness and excitement associated with this order, and thats pretty sad considering the computer freak that I am :(

Well I know one that may help. Let's all pitch in together and get a couple of gag t-shirts made up that say "Levono took my money and all I have to show for it is this stick of RAM" and then send it to the president of Levono, Yang Yuanqing c/o:

Received the RS-232 card today. So, 3 parts on my desk and no Lappy, but hey, it says "shipped" now. This is so bizzare (for lack of a better word) the way this is handled. Oh, and by the way, I had requested not to ship parts seperately.

Yea, playing with it right now. The z60m black cover is pretty decent, but doesn't feel as strong as the Ti z60t cover. Still better build than any dell, and surprisingly feels stiffer than the T43 at office depot.

It runs super quiet. I have had prime95 and a HD stresser going for about 10 minutes now, and CPU temp is 37 with Hd temp at 38. Fan is still off. I have heard it come on like 1-2 times so far, and you can barely hear the thing at all. Quite a nifty machine (world's beyond the dell's and hp's), so I hope my z60m might FINALLY arrive.

Also, for an all ABS plastic unit, compared to cf/metal of the T43, it comes off as a much stronger feel than the T43 I was using at office depot. the only spots of weakness are the thin spots near the cd drive, which was the same on the t43. Now I might not feel as bad reccomending the cheaper 799 unit to a family member that wants a nice build computer that is nice and rugged.

edit: no dead pixels on the 1680x1050 screen.

I recently got a 2nd HDD Adapter for the Ultrabay Slim and it came to Ontario, *California*, then went to Anchorage Alaska for one week, then came back to Ontario, CA and was finally shipped to me. Interesting; I have a few ideas as to what it could be, but this even happens to non-international shipments as well. Very strange...

Strange indeed. Louisville to Alaska then back to Louisville. All in the same day! Note the times...it doesn't make sense.

You, the person that censors/moves my posts/threads. This post pertains to a "Z" model and I was showing the process from purchase to actually testing and reporting on that machine. After a couple of days (@ a week) you decided to move the thread? Please let someone know you moved/censored posts. That option is in this software. That is real creepy (for lack of a better word). Mods should be required to read the "rules of the road" and give out the respect/courtesy to its' participating Members that they require themselves. Energy would be best utilized assisting.

Some thought, 562 views where the post was.

Energy would indeed be better utilized "assisting" rather than other activities such as blaming others; indeed.

The original reply was uncalled for;
