Which one is the best notebook ?

#1 Post by rleo25 » Sat Feb 25, 2006 9:42 am

I am saving some money in order to buy a replacement for my Thinkpad T42, by the end of the year. I am fully satisfied with the perfomance, design and construction of this extraordinary machine , let appart the monitor and graphics department, however I feel the technology trend will force me an update in less than a year.

Well that said, I would like to know which brand line including Lenovo's Thinkpad, are considered the best for you in this range:

- Bussiness line.
- Highest construction quality and materials.
- Support and service, 3 years guarantee.
- Personnal computing be one of the developer's main bussiness unit.
- Continued effort of the manufacturer in research and development.
- Thin and light, form factor up to 14" screen, battery life.
- Friendly design, excellent keyboard.
- Highest display and video quality.(Not necessarily for gaming or entertaining, but able to handle new OS, demands ... as VISTA)
- Complete range of ports and connectivity.
- Optical drive : dvd dual, 100gb hard drive.
- Top notch benchmarks (processor, chipset, memory perfomance)

Remember, highest construction quality is a must, the less plastic and flex the better... as to price no more than US$ 2.500.

Thanks for your cooperation !

Well, I suposse this has been a very hard question, it seems there isn't any notebook deserving the highest rank, at least for the time being, or ... this is so off topic in a Thinkpad forum that the issue doesn't deserve discussion?

Well; the more you pay, the more you get.

I would go with a T60, or maybe even wait for a T61.

If you want to know my rankings, here they are;

1.) Apple & IBM/Lenovo
2.) Toshiba and smaller Sonys; Panasonic Toughbook
3.) HP & Dell

There are others, Panasonc, Hitachi, Acer, Asus, Fujitsu, etc....But those are perhaps the best bet at the moment.

The HPs have spongy and rather bland keyboards nowadays; the Toshibas are pretty close to the Thinkpads when it comes to construction and they have some pretty good keyboards with nice tactile feeback. Sony has some good, small laptop models...but I haven't been impressed with the larger ones. And Dell is Dell. ;)

As a biased responder, I will say that the 'best notebook' is the 14" T42. That's what I have. The newer ones are faster, but I still think the T42 was the best designed. The T43's have the 2010 hard drive problem and purported fan noise. The T60 does not have S-Video, and is rather bland looking. The Z60t looks nice, but the palmrest is too shallow for my wrists. The Z60m is physically too large. So the 14" T42 is still my favorite.

I am biased too for now, and consider my own T42 one of the best of the crop (the last directly manufactured for IBM 03/05). And agree with you in the ranking, my last notebook was a Toshiba Tecra A4 and it was fine, second to IBM in construction) but let's open the search for the marvel team... thanks for your comments guys.
