Ordered T60p "CTO" model - ETA: 1-May-2006 (6 wks)

#1 Post by CupOfJoe » Thu Mar 16, 2006 1:24 am

Hi people,

I'm jumping on over here to the T60 side of the world.

I had previously been a T43p'er -- which I evaluated for a few weeks, and have decided to give it up in favor of a T60p.

I called Lenovo up and ordered a CTO (configure to order) T60p model. I'm excited and all, but wow -- the wait (order date: 14-March-2006, expected ship date 01-May-2006) is a killer.

However, from reading up on the forum here in the T60 corner of the world, it looks as though a lot of you have had to bear the wait.

So I'll sit back and take my medicine, just as all of you had to do!

So how did you customize your custom to order model?

My confirmation order gave a model # that doesn't even appear in the tabook.

Let's see here....

-- 14.1" screen
-- 2GHz duo-core
-- 256MB RAM (I'll upgrade w/aftermarket RAM to 2GB -- much cheaper)
-- 6 cell battery (I want to keep the footprint to a minimum)
-- 100GB 7200rpm hard drive
-- modem & bluetooth
-- 3945 a/b/g
-- 1 year warranty (save a bit of money over the 3 year warranty)
-- 256MB FireGL V5200
-- DVD/CD multi burner
-- Fingerprint reader
-- Windows XP home edition (I wipe the image off, and install XP Pro myself, thus saving more money)
-- ...and all the other standard goodies (sound, ultranav, etc.)

I ended up paying less for this configured model than the previously T43p I was evaluating -- probably because I was able to exclude the Verizon card, only purchase 256MB RAM from Lenovo, and downgrade the warranty length.

But, as I mentioned, the CTO models have a lengthy waiting period. Ah well -- I'll hang tough.

No warranty?

#4 Post by ageyfman » Thu Mar 16, 2006 12:28 pm

did you seriously only get a 1 year warranty on a machine that's almost $3000? My thinkpad had the motherboard fail twice, both times covered by warranty fully, without question - the first was within 1 year, the next was 1 year later. It costs 1/2 of one motherboard to get a full, they come to your house and take out your garbage, warranty with accidental damage repair to boot. Dude, you should REALLY reconsider the warranty.. it's a lifesaver.

Im gonna have to agree with the above poster, the warranty is one thing you should NEVER skimp on... in fact, im considering spending MORE for an extended warranty... paying for system board replacements is NO fun.

I hear you, dude.

I did think long & hard about the 3 year onsite warranty, but in the end chose the 1 year onsite warranty. So for at least the first year, they will come to my house and "take out my garbage", etc ...

Basically, I wanted to save money up front on this machine in order to make the purchase. In doing so, I was sure to ask the sales rep if I could purchase more warranty coverage after the purchase (i.e., towards the end of the 1st year warranty period). And (as many of you surely know) you can.

So maybe towards the end of the first year, I'll purchase a couple more years (maybe onsite, maybe not). Yeah -- I'll end up paying a bit more by splitting the warranty into separate purchases, but at least I'll be comfortable buying the machine now with the safety of a full, onsite 1 year warranty.

Also, without getting too specific, the $3000 price tag you quoted was (somewhat significantly) overshot in my case.

P.S. -- you changed the subject line of the post to "No warranty?" -- yet purchasing a 1 year, onsite warranty is full coverage just like the 3 year, onsite warranty. So I'm not sure I quite understand why the subject of the post was change to that. :?:

One of several reasons I puchase ThinkPad computers is the outstanding and comprehensive 3 yr. warranty. This is money well spent.

Of the many ThinkPads I've purchased I have only had to use the warranty twice. Once a hard drive died, they sent me a box to ship it in on Monday, I sent it to them Monday afternoon and had it back Wednesday before noon! The other case was a system board failure and the turn around on that one was the same. I was shocked how fast they get the job done.

There is no other company that provides this level of service and support.

same experience with me, 2 times, MB replacement in less than 5 days each. Also, why the 256 ram? if you will most likely end up throwing out the 256 megs to put 2 of something back in their place (unless you are just gonna stick a 1 gig in there and call it a day). You might want to spend a bit extra on some ram, and take the FireGL down a bit (that card is designed pretty much for AutoCAD, and if you don't use it, it might be overkill).

But yeah, the reason I questioned the warranty thing is because I had to buy one after the year ALMOST ran out, it cost more, and thank god the repairs had to be done while the warranty was in effect - it would have cost me 700 bucks to repair the laptop if it broke 2 weeks after it did! Let me tell you, I was SO EXCITED to buy the ServicePac.

I included the 256MB only because they can't ship it without any memory.

So, the economics of the memory situation is this: if I were to have Lenovo throw in a stick of memory which would have been useful to me (i.e., a 1GB stick), they wanted something like $170. Heck, I'll be able to purchase (locally) 2GB (1GB x 2 sticks) for somewhere around $220 (or even less).

The "cost" of the Lenovo 256MB memory stick (in this CTO configuration) is, if I recall correctly, $26. So yeah, I will be throwing away (i.e., not using) $26.

Also, if I'm not mistaken, you need to have matching pairs (in terms of size) in order to take advantage of the dual channel memory architecture -- so that really doesn't leave any room for a lone 256MB stick.

As for the video controller, I'm mainly interested in giving this purchase some assured life down the road. For example, Vista, if I recall from my readings, has some heavy video/graphic requirements. I'm also a *nix user, and the various X window enviroments can really tax a machine. Add to that running various emulations (Wine, VM, ...) can bring a machine to its knees.

Having said all that, sure -- it may be an overkill. But I think it a good idea (if one is in the position to do so) to buy towards the higher end when purchasing laptops (versus a desktop -- which are more of a commodity item than laptops are, relatively speaking.)

Is your CTO order's shipping date increased?

#10 Post by wqyang » Tue Mar 28, 2006 11:28 pm

I ordered following OP's idea, and the shipping date is increasing one day each day. First shipping date was 05/05, now, it's 05/15.

Yup. Every day I login and check the status of my order, it increases one day. Grrrrrrrrr!!

It is not due to ship until 05-18-2006 now. From reading other posters' comments about Lenovo's online shipment tracking system, I wouldn't put too much salt behind those dates, though. :D

OK -- this is really getting frustrating.

On a daily basis, I check the status of my T60p which is on order. And every day, it continually gets pushed back one day.

Is it because I ordered a CTO model? Is there anyone else out there who ordered a CTO model and is seeing their ship date increment 1 day into the future every single day?

How about non-CTO models -- anyone else experiencing this type of delay?

I ordered on 20-March-2006, and it is not due to ship until 23-May-2006 now.

Impatient -- yes - I admit I am. But hey, will my machine ever ship? (That's a rhetorical statement - I know it will - I'm just venting.)

This isn't unusual, when I ordered my T43p my shipping date also was pushed back by a day every day and you know what, it wound up shipping a week earlier than the original shipping date.

That's good to hear -- thanks for the feedback. Like I said, I know it will eventually ship -- it's just a let down seeing the ship date continually increase every day.

A "shipping date rant" thread was created in the t60 forum specifially for this stuff.
