E-bay. Recovery CD. Did not receive yet. Scam?
E-bay. Recovery CD. Did not receive yet. Scam?
So I bought a X24 recovery CD from this guy in Australia.
Paid through paypal and he says that it was sent on 21st of March via airmail. As of today it has not arrived, which is taking toooo long in my opinion.
Anyways, I did not leave any feedback on him and yet somehow his rating says that I left a feedback "Fast Delivery. Excellent Packaging. Item as described. A+++++++++++++++++++++++" on March 20th, when I bought the discs. I never left feedback on this seller. I don't understand how it got there.
anyways, just search for "X24 recovery" on ebay and you will see this seller with bunch of recovery CDs for about $20.
It also looks like he is just making copies of these discs and selling them on ebay as you can see from other feedbacks. This would be illegal right? Apparently he tells the buyers that the discs are original as you can see one of the buyers left a negative feedback and the seller retaliated by responding with a negative feedback as well.
I am not worried about the money. Actually I am a poor student now so $25 matters to me. I am just more concerned about getting a set of recovery discs and also worried that others are getting scamed as well.
What do you guys think and what I should I do about it? I only have 8 feedbacks and I can't afford to have a retaliatory negative feedback from this guy. Anyone with such experience before? I really would like to know how did the a positive feedback from me got there in the first place.

Sounds like a scam to me, if you haven't gotten the discs by now and you can't track the package. I would go ahead and contact eBay regarding this guy, they should be able to handle matters....especially if it is illegal and you can prove it.

I have no experience with ebay other than what i've read and seen here and on tv. That whole negative feedback thing seems to put people in almost blackmail type situations. This may be one you have to just let go if you fear retalitory bad feedback. Obviously this is a scam, doesn't ebay have any check and balances??
Well looking at items that this guy is selling, he is selling and buying quite a lot of stuff. Mostly IBM related products. (He could be a member in this forum may be?).
Anyways all of the hardwares have listed item numbers but it looks like all the recovery CD items are listed as private items as I can see from other people's feedbacks.
Weird...
I will give it another week. If I do note receive it I suppose I will have to ask for a refund.

Yeah, for your account to have been highjacked, I'm pretty sure that the person would have done more than given themselves positive feedback.
Could it be that you accidentally left feedback for the wrong person?
As for the shipping, I'd give it just a little longer, but so that you know, paypal will only protect you within 30 days of the sale date, so keep that in mind. I made the mistake of waiting longer because of returning the item back to the seller and it got lost in the mail. It was like 33 days later before I tried to file, and I was pretty much told too bad so sad.

I don't know where you are, but if you're in the U.S. and this came from Australia, I'd suggest that you haven't allowed enough time yet--what with lost baggage, "homeland security" and other snafu's
Didn't you insist that this be shipped with a tracking number?
I've bought stuff coming from Canada to the US that took this long!!

I guess I did make a mistake in giving him a feedback by mistake.
I will wait for another week and hopefully it will get here.
I have had a lot of correspondence from Sydney Australia with my friends and most of the time it used to take about a week and ten days at most to get stuff here. Like 440roadrunner said after homeland security establishment things have slown down quite a bit.
Anyways I would be [censored] if the recovery disc is just a copy. It would be easy pocket money to make on e-bay without never running out of it.

I guess with the copying of CDs you could possibly report it to eBay (I've done this with people who've tried selling DVDs of music performances they've recorded off TV and had luck with them having to remove similar items). Considering I need some recovery CDs for my T40 and had given this eBayer some thought if such CDs came up for sale, I appreciate the heads up.
But I'll probably end up giving Lenovo a call after Easter and finding out how I can get replacements from there and not risk getting ripped off.
As for mail timing, I've posted CDs (I live in Sydney) to friends in the US and they've usually taken a week or so

So I received the CDs today. It took 30 days, which is ridiculous. They were in fact copies. I am quite unhappy.
Now whether they work? I am not sure. I have not tried.
So what out for recovery CDs on e-bay. Make sure to ask whether they are genuine or copies.
I suppose that I am not infrnging copyright law as long as I own the computer and have license to it right?

Correct. As long as the CDs are for the OS licensed on the bottom of your machine you're legal.daeojkim wrote:I suppose that I am not infrnging copyright law as long as I own the computer and have license to it right?
E.g., you can't legally use W2K recovery CDs on a machine that carries a W98 license.

Did you try the WTB (Marketplace) portion of the forum here first looking for the disks? You might have been able to save money on them, even though they would have most likely been copies as well.daeojkim wrote:So what out for recovery CDs on e-bay. I am actually slowly working on creating my own repository of restore CDs so that if I pick up a system, I will have disks available to restoring the system, thus keeping it legit. As James the Elder is correct, in that it is the COA that is important, not necessarily the disks...assuming that they are for the same version of Windows.
If it helps, I'd be glad to send you $5 for a copy set of the disks, to help offset the costs for you. I don't currently have an X24, but who knows....maybe dorronto will run across one and I'd pick it up from him.
I asked the same seller a question about whether the CDs are a copy or not - no reply a week later, so I'm not surprised they are in fact copies.daeojkim wrote:So I received the CDs today. It took 30 days, which is ridiculous. They were in fact copies. I am quite unhappy.

OK. I just spent about 3 hours reinstalling my X24 using the recovery CDs and all the updates. It did work. So I am not as upset. Just glad that it is working well now.
Thanks everyone for the offers.
I think I will be dozing during tomorrow's lecture. LOL.
