i spent many hours staring at LCD and Plasma one weekend at circuit city..
the clear winner for color, clarity, brightness and features was the Samsung..
LG was a close second..
sadly (or not) sony was way back in the pack.. color was not good and picture was a bit fuzzy..
i recently read an article that said some of the off brands were excellent values.. because they used the same glass as the majors but could sell cheaper..
plasma is a bit worrisome to me..
YMMV..

Bill,
I agree that the PLASMA is by far the greatest "quality" picture do to the fact that each individual pixel is lit as opposed to ALL the pixels on an lcd (that is why there is higher contrast ration on a plasma). In a home environment the picture is really good for an LCD, keep in mind that in a store there is high intensity lighting etc, this can reduce the effect of a high contrast screen) The LCD above can do awesome reproductions of black color.
Plasma and LCD technology currently have a much sorter life span then regular CRT based TV's. The one with the "shortest" life span is the PLASMA technology; also the PLASMA is prone to burn-in problems. Yes, many are currently "burn-proof"; but burn-ins still occur and the process to remove it (scanning option) cuts the life of the screen even more. In short for the money a good quality LCD TV is not a bad deal.
Also consider that for a TRUE HD experience, it will cost a LOT of money to get it right! Cabling, HD subscription etc AND the available channels are only a handful. Even if you do spend the $$$ the cost and available service at this time IMO is not worth-it. Some people will say that you can buy it now and have it for when more HD content is available. 1ST there is NO SET standard on HD TV, so by the time they decide on something and they do a "full-rollout" more then likely you will have to upgrade your set (politics and $$$) If that is not the case, it is still several years away before a "full-rollout" and your TV will more then likely be "obsolete" or not able to take advantage of some "new feature" that come out...so everyone will rush to the store to get the latest and greatest........NOW...if you are going to use the "TV" for presentations in an office environment then YES..I highly recommend the PLASMA, as the high contrast ratio, coupled with the DVI/VGA input will make for some excellent viewing on the eyes.
DVD quality is not even close to HD! SO if you are watching regular "cable, sat or TV" then the HD feature of the plasma is worthless; is like buying a performance car and you only drive it to and from work in rush hour traffic...... I did it for the space savings (HD capable), I had a HUGE TV setup and it took double the space of the setup I currently have. I have seen the LCD above with HD and it is sweet....
Scepter as I understand uses the Olevia LCD's on their TV's (or the other way around) and the Scepter has great reviews as well. There are not many name brand LCD TV's that have less then a 12ms response time on their LCD's, some are a TON of $$$ and their specs are horrible! I feel sorry for how many people got shafted with some of the TV's out there....
