17" MBP announced on Apple's site..

#1 Post by dxben » Tue Apr 25, 2006 4:39 am

I'm sorry if this has already been posted, but I just happened to surf to the apple homepage and saw this:

http://www.apple.com/

Seems nothing performance related has changed, unless you count the addition of Firewire 800 and a better DVD drive. The CPU and GPU are the same, although there's no way of knowing yet whether the 17" MBP will have its ATI chip properly clocked, unlike its 15" cousin.

MODERATOR EDIT: Moved to the appropriate forum.

And the reason it hasn't been posted is because this is a ThinkPad forum?

No need to be snarky. Many people on this forum have been going back and forth between a T60 and a MBP. Its somewhat off topic but not irrelevent to a lot of people, just read the threads around here.

I wasn't being snarky, just informing you why it didn't show up earlier. I am one of the people who's turned in the T60p to buy a MBP, so I am clearly in the interested set---and have ardently followed those threads you mentioned.

As an advocate for both ThinkPads & PowerBooks, I must remind you that there are plenty of apple forums for you to post on.

This is the THINKPAD FORUM!

And posting about other laptops is strictly prohibited?

I thought we had threads here where everyone here was suggesting that so-and-so NOT get a TP X series and get a different model due to their needs, and things like that.

Yeah I don't know what the big offense was. I thought it was relevent because I have heard people here talk about waiting for the next MBP model, although this one seems also to just extend the size.

Its pretty well accepted that the Thinkpad and the MBP are the two top notebooks out there in their class. If the thread is of no interest to you, don't read it.

I don't think we're in danger of the forum becoming completely off topic. Its not like I posted a thread about a new Alienware laptop. Sheesh.

This is an Open Forum and discussion on just about anything is acceptable (see FAQ). However, if it is not related to Thinkpads, then it goes in the "Off-Topic" conference.

Well I felt this was related to the Thinkpad for the reasons I've stated. I don't know what a thread on Gas prices is doing here though, I don't see anyone crying about that. Does that make sense?

Well, actually, I do feel it's in the right section, being in Off Topic Stuff.

In a ThinkPad section, it wouldn't be appropriate, as it's not a ThinkPad.

But, I was assuming that the flames were having to do with this news being posted on forum.thinkpads.com, and not that it was originally posted in a ThinkPad section. (I first saw this thread in Off Topic Stuff. I did see that it had been moved, though.)

Anyway, how about we get on topic?

I wouldn't get this laptop for two reasons. First, there's a reason I'm using an R51e and not a T60 or X60 - cost. Second, I am addicted to the TrackPoint, and couldn't go back to a touchpad. ;)

They aren't crying about the Gas Prices thread because it is in the Off-Topic conference.

I have no problem with the link that you posted, infact, I checked it out myself. However, since there isn't a direct correlation to a specifc Thinkpad, it was moved.

Now if we can just get everyone back on topic of the information provided in your link, and not about whether or not it should have been posted everything will be just dandy. :D

Ok, whatever, now that we're back on topic, it will be interesting to find out if Apple also underclocked the 1600 on this one as well.

Well said, point taken. Sorry for the "flame" it was dumb on my part.

I had not seen an Alienware in person until just now. I'm at Starbucks and in walks this guy who sits at the table next to me. He reaches in his very large backpack and pulls out a massive bright blue Alienware laptop!
A cordial chap, we strike up a conversation. I show an interest in his "gaming machine" and get the tour. He intimates that he has nearly $5,000 in this computer! Two weeks old with every option available. Certainly an eye opener for me. Obviously there is a market for these, it was a very interesting experience listening to how he takes it to gaming parties, etc.
Did'nt realize how spoiled I was with ThinkPad quality. His blue beast was hot, noisey, and very heavy. Plus, I was very surprized that the display & build quality was not reflective of the price point. Suddenly my ThinkPad T60 truly appeared "thin & light", quiet & incredibly inexpensive. :o
