... what model would you choose?

For the purposes of my post, the 20th Century ended on December 31, 2000.

I'm not sure if I'd rather have a 600 series or a T20 series. The 600s seem a bit more portable and I like the keyboards, but the T20s are faster. I guess for everyday tasks I would choose the 600 series: either a 600E or X.

I would probably go with either a 600E/600X or a T21 as the T21 came out in October of 2000 if I am not mistaken.

Then again, I might have just stuck with my trusty 701c.

My 600E is datestamped 03/00 on the underside and is the fastest laptop I own and it's also the ThinkPad I use on a normal basis so I guess I don't even have to give thought to my answer on this question. However, if I could have anything, I'd go for the 650mhz version of the ThinkPad 600X. My only complaints about the model is that the rubberized wrist pad can be high maintenance if you live in a dusty house.

Well, the T21 was introduced in 2000, so it meets your time requirement.

But I'd probably still go with a 600X for a road machine. Even one of my PIII 650MHz machines with 576MB Ram and a 7K60 would run rings around any of my early model Ts, never mind after I upgraded it to a PIII 850MHz.

And there's no comparison to the 600 series keyboard in almost any other Thinkpad.

My son and DIL flew in for a surprise visit this weekend for his birthday. One of his "presents" was that he liberated the new X31 I just got after he fell in love with the size and functions.

I thought this would result in his finally giving back my venerable PIII 850MHz 600X, but instead he convinced me to set it up for his wife in lieu of her POS P4 Toshiba that has shuffled off this mortal coil at a much too young age. She'll probably get another 3 or 4 years of use out of it if she wants.

The 600 series is the Energizer Bunny of laptops!

I see that they go for less than $200 on eBay.

Thinkpad 240X for me! I have actually only used the 240, but the 240X is supposed to be almost identical except it has PIII, so it should be even better than the 240.

As much as I swear by the 600Es, I would have to say a T21, because of upgrade possibilities. I have really grown to love my T21, since I bought it last year from no_man. A day has not passed that I have not used it. I currently have a T23, T20, 600E (with a 650mhz cpu) AND a R40 (2.2ghz, 80gb 5400rpm, 1gb ram) YET I still turn to the T21 every single day.

I'm a big fan of the 13.3" screen on the 600 series - I wish more manufacturers used it today (although a 14" widescreen is close), however, my vote goes to the X20.

Very portable and rugged, I still travel exclusively with my X22 with a 3Com A/B/G XJack wifi pc card and a USB 2.0 pc card (for iPod and digital camera connection).

X20's are about $200 on eBay.

My first choice would be the IBM Blackforest, though it's not a ThinkPad, and not very portable.

Failing that, probably the 600X. I would prefer the 600X over the 600E because of the faster PIII processor (vs. the PII). I had a 600E that has since been passed down to my daughter, and she uses it virtually every day! Practically the only problems I have had with it were self-inflicted, and it's still going strong. Once I cracked the LCD when I had it packed in my overstuffed briefcase. Another time I broke the speaker ribbon cable connector when I was replacing the CPU with a faster one. And lastly the original TV-Out card I put in was fried by a lightening strike while I had it connected to a TV. In all three cases I made the repairs myself after buying the replacement parts (usually on e-bay).

I did have one of the PC card slots quit working for an unknown reason, but the other one still works, and one is all that is really needed.

I've owned a lot of TPs since, but I'll have to go with my "first love". Just haven't been around anything engineered or assembled like it was. Now if I could have gotten my T23 in the door, it might have been a different story!
