Did I enter the Doom3 forum??

#1 Post by stgreek » Fri Aug 06, 2004 6:00 am

The main reason I love these forums is that it is one of the very few forums that you'll find answers for what you came for: Thinkpads. No Kerry vs Bush, no Europe vs USA, no war vs peace. Just Thinkpads.

However, in the last few days, I see a worrying increase in posts that are either useless, or in the wrong forum. Take for example the T series forum: Top three entries concern Doom3, and not Thinkpads. I know that some people might have interest in it but most don't (after all, if you game, get a Dell monster).

Since I wouldn't like to exclude people just because they like games but also keep the clean, informative style of the forums I would like to suggest creating a "Games" or a "Performance" forum where people will be able to compare their FPS,MB/s,3DMarks and whatever they like, without filling the other forums with mostly useless information.

Thanks
Stavros

I thinks this is a normal proccess in the middle of the maturity line of the T42... and I have no problem whatsoever with the posts on Doom3 or other.
I also don't know if there is enough posts to sostain a new forum for games but I remember that one Doom3 was expecific for the T42. Besides, when we go out of topic, it usualy ends pretty soon, it never ends out of hand, and arguments are rarely repead or ended on deaft ears... love these people here!

-Never played a game in my ThinkPad, but sure it must be great!
-Europe rules (at least I hope it will sometime...)!
-Kerry for President (but not too entusiastic either...)
-Peace. ("There are causes worth dying for, but none worth killing for." Albert Camus)

The Doom 3 posts are definitely relevant to the T series laptops. Many people use modified Catalyst drivers for the FireGL T2 video card and it's important for both game players and non-game players to know about driver incompatibilities.

It will definitely blow over. The entire internet world is obsessed with Doom 3 right now, but it won't last. This is something pretty rare & won't be an ongoing concern - my guess that is, if a game or performance sub-forum were to be created, it would probably be underused. Weather the storm! This too shall pass ;)

My point was that most T series owners are not gamers, and for those IBM's drivers should be the obvious choice, not Catalyst drivers. BTW, I am NOT accusing the gamers of anything. It's just what Txiasaeia said: the world has gone Doom3-mad and I probably can't stand it...

I don't see what the big deal is. If you're not interested in the topic, then don't read it. The title gives it away. Its not like they were totally irrelevant since they did pertain to the T series. You may not play games on your Thinkpad but many of us do.

Teresa, please read my original post before posting. I actually suggested a forum for the gamers out there, and I never said it was a big deal. Games can also be played on A,R,X,G and earlier Thinkpads too, not just T series laptops. If you had 3 <insert game here> topics on EACH forum you would be annoyed, wouldn't you?. I though off-topic was a suggestion forum, and I made one. And by the way, I do play games on my Thinkpad.

stgreek, what you have noticed is just another phase of hype in some of the users of this forum....before D3 it was the keyboards, before that the battery, and before that all those mindless specs comparisions and reccomendations. It will die down in due time, and rather than try to make a category for every single type of thread (we mods have considered several combinations) I think we can deal with the occasional (really theres only about 3 or 4 threads in the T series forum, right?) off-topic chatter.

Bill has asked to maintain a policy of no censorship or filtering of the content on this board, and I think that unless it is a significant problem or a blatantly off-topic/offensive/useless thread, we tend to let things play out. I don't believe there is enough demand yet for a Gaming section to this forum, but D3 and perhaps later HL2 may prove me wrong....we will see when the time comes.

You have a valid point; I mean, Thinkpads aren't really what you think of when you think "gaming system", but they can play a game or two and i dont think many who shell out the $$ for a GPU like the 9600 can resist an occasional game (if you can, then you probably don't have time to read this forum :) ). But like I said us mods and Bill are working on it, and hopefully soon we will distribute some o the HEAT from the T-series section to the rest of these forums, so people aren't as gravitated towards them...
