T43 warranty extension

#1 Post by Sleepy » Mon Jul 03, 2006 11:31 am

I bought a T43 (2686 DJU) last August and it had 1 year warranty. I would like to extend it now, but I somehow cannot reach anybody to get some information. I called the IBM support phone and was rerouted to Atlanta support center and the phone was answered by some guy who spoke horrible English, I really cannot understand how could they allow this person to handle phone calls! I could not understand a single sentence, he otld me all the lines are busy and he cannot help me out with the warranty right now and to call back later (meanwhile I was on hold for 15min while he was trying to find something). Does anybody know an email or the phone number that i could use to get some information on how to extend my warranty? Thanks.
T43 (2686-DJU) - 1.86GHz, 15" SXGA, 512MB RAM, 80GB 5400 HD, Fingerprint Scanner, 802.11abg, ATI x300

Actually, you can search IBM/Lenovo warranty online and upgrade from there. :-)

Sorry to appear dumb but when did they stop offering 3yr warranty as standard?

I just bought a Z60t and was sorely disappointed to discover they only have a 1yr warranty! Lenovo C / N / V series I could understand - but Thinkpads with only 1 yr warranty!!

I foolishly assumed that Thinkpads all came with a 3ry warranty - doh!

I bought my T42 about a year and a half ago, while ThinkPads were still being sold by IBM and not Lenovo. At that time at least, IBM offered some models (T-42's was what I was looking at) with a 1-year warranty, and some with a 3-year warranty. The 3-year warranty models were of course more expensive. Me, being the cheapskate that I am, knowingly bought a T42 with a 1-year warranty. I'll know in another year and a half if I made the right decision. :)

I am not too worried really as I have owned an T20 before for 2.5yrs and no problems developed.

My employer also standardises on Thinkpads and neither myself nor any of my colleagues have had any problems with their laptops in the past two years I have been here.

Just wanted the security of being covered and not worrying for 3 years.

You can buy a warranty upgrade. Just be aware that it must be done before your first year is out or it becomes quite expensive. Your existing warranty starting date begins when the unit was purchased, not when you received your unit.

Yeah thanks for that - I have already looked into it. However, I feel that I have already paid a premium for the Thinkpad brand and dont want to pay a further £100 for warranty.

I have raised a support request complaining about the warranty period - just see what happens.

There have been Thinkpads with only 1 year warranties for a long time. These are the cheaper models that are meant to save you some money.

Examples: A20m, 560z, 390x, etc.
