Can Thinkpad burn MP3's onto CD and how?

#1 Post by Sand » Thu Jul 13, 2006 9:56 pm

Yes, I have many lectures in MP3 format downloaded on my hard drive and I was wondering if the Thinkpad T42 can burn them onto CD-R's so I can play them in the car. If so, where do I go on the IBM site to do that as I could not find anything telling me how to go about it.Do I need to buy something extra to add onto the laptop to do this, and if so, could you please put it in , like, kindergarten terms?

I would appreciate any help,
Thanks,
Sand

That is a function of the burner software and not the drive or the computer per se. They have to be burned via Audio CD format and not as a Data CD. There are several ways to do this, one is using the IBM RecordNow! software and selecting the little home icon, then click "Make an Audio CD" or you can use Windows Media Player to burn them onto CD in an audio CD, CDA, format.

Be warned though, if these MP3 files of lectures are large, you will get a *far* smaller amount of tracks on the CD if you burn via audio format. 13 averaged-sized tracks are what you could expect if the MP3s are of typical song length; seeing, though, as they are MP3s of lectures, they are probably *alot* longer.

I think Windows Media Player and iTunes can both burn audio CDs too.

I said WMP; but not iTunes; yes, though, iTunes will do that as well. :)

Hi Christopher,

Where would I go to find the IBM RecordNow software? I tried at Access IBM and searched under the different headings there and put those words in the Search box but nothing came up.
Or, how do I use WMP to do the same?
Or where can I go to learn about this as maybe it's a little too involved to explain.

Also, if these talks are between half -hour and hour in length are you saying that it would not be a feasible idea to do,or wouldn't fit on one disk?

Thanks,
Sand

If for some reason you are using a retail version of Windows, you won't be able to download RecordNow, as only "updates" are available online. You need to use the restore disks to be able to get it.

Or, you can just copy your MP3 lectures to a pocket USB MP3 player (they are becoming very cheap these days) and play them in your car using a cassette adapter plugged to the players's earphone jacks. Just an educated guess: a player with a 1gb memory can play >8hrs of mp3 audio? That's a lot of listening :)

But that isn't what is asked for; yeah, it will get you higher capacities than an CDA format Redbook audio CD, but that is the wonder of MP3 and not the old CDA format. :)

Sand; in that case, simply use Windows Media Player, or iTunes if you want, to load the audio files and then burn them to a CD. It will tell you how much room is on the CD for audio to start with; then it will update you along the way.

tfflivemb2,

I don't know what you mean by a 'retail' ver AFAIK you can only buy it directly from IBM, which is what I did. I bought it almost two years ago; do you think it needs to be updated?

I did go to Programs and it was listed there that I had RecordNow in my computer, but I don't have any of the cd-r's right now to try it.In the meantime I will read and learn how to use it.

I can let you all know if it doesn't work out.

Thanks for all your help,
San

Just open Wndows Media Player and click the burn tab at the top and drop your MP3's into the window and burn them to a cd. It will convert them to the proper format.

I was trying to find out whether or not you were using the T42, as it came from IBM. Some people have purchased their Thinkpads from other sources and loaded their own copy of an OS, such as WinXPPro.

Since you apparently rec'd your T42 directly from IBM, you of course has RecordNow already installed....as you saw.
