A new button for donations to this great community...thanks.

#1 Post by NS » Thu Jul 27, 2006 11:16 am

Dear Admins and Moderators,

May i know what is happening to this TP forum? How come suddenly got 1 \"make a donation\" button appear??? :?

Is thinkpad forum in a financial difficulty state? If yes, i am glad to help you guys with the finance problem by chipping in a bit of my savings and also get more members to pool in some money to support this great forum. We cannot see this great forum go under.

And i still prefer the old TP forum layout... Why now include a box and lines??? So ugly!!!

*Sorry, no offence here* NS is curious to know what is happening to this fantastic world of TP fans...? Why the sudden change? I know about the ongoing changes to the forum to make new users register using paypal in the future but why it end up as donation??? :?

It's a means of making a voluntary donation to keep the Forum free and, more importantly, free of ads.

As the Forum continues to grow it's simply unrealistic, and unfair, to ask our host Bill Morrow to continue to support the Forum solely out of his own pocket.

Yes, i strongly agree. All members got a share to use this forum. It is really a shame to see only Mr Morrow paying for the forum and no one offer a helping hand.

But, only donate tru paypal??? No other means???

It's either paypal or fraudulent cashier checks. Most sites ask for donations, and I actually asked why they didn't have the option when I signed on here. Even if money wasn't an issue, it's still a good way to show your appreciation.

it might be that there are other online means to make such a donation..
but paypal is pretty universal and they take credit cards as i used my "premier" paypal account for that button (and not my personal (and free) account which does not take credit cards)..

and, no, i am not yet broke, but after about 10 years of maintaining and paying and now spending hours verifying each new user so as to keep the FU~!#%$ING [censored]!~)*(&%$!..s from singapore out of the forum, it is time..

ya think..?

It may be way past time.

The information, tips, and advice available here for free has significant value. The time, expertise and effort required to administer the site also have significant value. It's not reasonable to expect to get something that has significant value for free.

A request for a donation (or even a mandatory membership fee) is a small price to pay for the value obtained in return. So I'd urge everyone who can (and if you can buy a ThinkPad you can) to pony up.

I agree too. While it is not mandatory, I really think people should show their appreciation.

I currently have not started to work yet. But I still would like to show my appreciation. It will not break my bank.

The other tech forums i use have always had a "donation" sign up.
It's a way to show appreciation for help received at no charge.

It's a no brainer and way past time.

Donation made. Thanks Bill and everyone else here for all that you do. I've always had my questions answered, found the parts and accessories I've needed and bought and sold computers here with a minimum of fuss and lots of good will.

I'm sorry, but that is a pretty brash question to ask, even with a disclaimer that states "Sorry, no offence here" (sic).

IF this question begged to be asked, then it should have been directed directly to an Admin...more specifically Bill Morrow, via PM. IMHO, it is the equivalent to asking someone about their financial situation, and given the fact that you added the disclaimer makes it only more obvious that you thought that it might not be a polite question to ask. /rant

On a lighter note, I do think that the PayPal button is a GREAT idea. I have been hoping that Bill would add this for a long time. It gives many of us a chance to give back for the things that Bill has graciously bestowed upon us.

Not only that, but even a PM would be a sore idea. Given that PMs can be, in certain situations, annoying and in the current implementation of phpBB we have on the forums, there is no way to spam filter/ignore them.

Although Bill does have a *very* good point when he says

Mmm, indeed.

I suppose it got through given the title change of this thread from "is the forum going broke???" by the OP to a more intelligent one; how much of an increment that is, however, remains to be seen.

I did. It was very provocative:
serving or tending to provoke, excite, or stimulate; stimulating discussion or exciting controversy; "a provocative remark"; "a provocative smile"; "provocative Irish tunes which...compel the hearers to dance" :) -

Ok, back to my original topic...

I am from singapore so i should donate in USD or Spore dollars? And the amount??? Don\'t tell me is more than S$10.00.

USD $1.00 = S$1.578...

How to pay without paypal??? In singapore, if you want to apply for a credit card, you need to have a certain amount of cash in your bank account or else the bank will deduct a certain amount if the basic amount of requirement to apply for a credit card is not met...

:?
