What messenger is most popular in your country?

I`m thinking about get some messenger to contact people from this forum and many other english forums, in my country there are specyfic messengers like gadu-gadu or tlen. What is the most popular messenger with which i can speak with people from USA or England, France etc. ? I can see that some have ICQ, what about jabber? Do you know it?

In a short list;

1.) AIM (popular)
2.) ICQ (now using the same thing as AIM, if I recall correctly)
3.) Yahoo! and MSN messenger (cross-compatible for IMing)

Those are the top three, but there are many more like Jabber and GoogleTalk (not too widespread).

The best thing to do is to get an all-in-one client manager like Miranda or Trillian and then manage them all from there.

There is also IRC, but that really can't be considered an IM service.

Yeah, I agree with Chris. If you are going to have to decide between the group, I recommend Trillian. The only downfall is that you can do each of the indivisual features that are specific to just one IM service.

Of course, with having Trillian, or which ever multi service you choose, you will still need to sign up with each individual service.

I see that ICQ seems to be making a comeback. I generally just use MSN or Yahoo, on 24 hours a day...even if I am not. Not too much of a fan of AIM anymore, whereas it use to be the only one that I use.

but quit when that computer went to my assistant..

but on any of those services mentioned above..
how do you avoid the inevitably SPAM..?

Fairly easy, treat it like an email account and guard it. Better yet, have two, one public and the other "trusted."

You can also go incognito and not publish *any* of your details; as an example, you would have to look for an ICQ# out of a list of millions even when you aren't sure that person is listed. That is pretty good to stop all but the most determined of spammers. I haven't, though, gotten much, if any spam, on any of my accounts. Email or IMs. Simply by following those procedures.

I avoid the spam by using those email addresses for nothing more than signing up for things. It hasn't been until this Singapore thing started, that I started getting ridiculous IMs at random times asking me to take part in webcam chats. They started the day after first Huang emailed me. Before that, I never had a problem with IMs...just email spam.

If your friends have a GTalk, that would be a good second program. It can be accessed from any internet browser where you can access your email account, and it will very soon have voicemail and unlimited size file transfer. Of course, only good if your friends use it, otherwise Trillian all the way. I keep AOLs evilware off my computer (not "if at all possible", I go to extreme lengths to make it possible).

Which Huang? That idiot or Brandon Huang Zhong Wei? 1 way to curb with spam is to block all incoming mails from that sender will do. Don't be involve in webcam chats.

The safest IM service is AIM and Yahoo!.

Here everyone uses MSN Messenger. Used ICQ before that - but as more [censored] to MSN, I went that path aswell.
Works great, so why not.

Never had any spam on IM's.

In SE Asia, its mostly MSN messanger. Not sure about East Asia, my guest would be Yahoo! since Yahoo! auction owns over there.
