Router setup help

#1 Post by Torque » Tue Aug 08, 2006 4:09 pm

Hello Thinkpad forums.

I bought a Linksys router today. A WRT54GC, to be exact.

Thing is, I have two computers. A desktop and a laptop. So I bought a wireless router to be able to take the lappie around the flat etc.

I have successfully set the router up with encryption and done the same with my machines, so they can "talk" to each other. But sadly, I have no internet :( The internet connection works (checked) when I connect the cable directly to the laptop. But when going through the router, absolutely nothing.

Any ideas :?:

EDIT: Its an 8mbit connection. I live at a dorm (i think its called that in english) where we have guys managing the network etc. who told me that my IP was determined by their router. My problem may lie there, but I'm not exactly a professor at these things. So any enlightenment would be greatly apreciated :)

Ask them if they are binding your MAC address to their system (to prevent outside machines from getting access). If so, that will cause the problem you are experiencing. That is only one cause. The other may be that they don't want another DHCP server on their network (your router is a DHCP server by default).

Can you tell us the following?

1. What kind of encryption are you using on both your computer and router? e.g. WEP 64 bit, WEP 128 bit, WPA PSK, WPA AES? Encryption method should be equal on both on the router and notebook and the key should be the same.

2. Check if there is a limit on the number of computers allowed to connect through the router.

3. Check if MAC address filter is ON

4. Check if the router is set to broadcast only 802.11g. If your notebook is 802.11b then the above setting will prevent the notebook to connect to router.

5. Make sure to change the SSID of the router so that it is not set to default "linksys". There could be someone else using this SSID with encryption. I see it all the time on my apartment "linksys", "netgear" un encrypted open WiFi (very very bad).

I think that's the only basic things that I can think of for now.

Check above things and let us know.

if this makes your head spin, ive found the customer service to be helpful- that is, 1) if you have the time to sit on the phone, and 2) if you understand hindi.

JDHurst They dont use MAC filtering on their network. I have to register my MAC adress with them though, for traffic logging. This has all been done for both my machines and the new router.

I think you may have a point about DHCP. I'll try and make some calls around.

daeojkim

1. I am using 128bit WEP on both machines. The keys are also the same.

2. The standard configuration is 50 computers.

3. The MAC filter is ON (turned on by me) and I've entered both my MAC adresses as exceptions.

4. The router is set to both B and G networks. My notebook is G.

5. The SSID is changed from the standard value.

dsigma6 I'll start off by asking the guys responsible for the network :)

How does internet comes to your home? On RJ45 cable or different way? Do you have cable modem? If there is some modem before plugging router switch modem off, it can only work with one MAC, so first device you`ll connect to it will work not any other :)

Contacted the Linksys support who helped me set it up.

As JD pointed out, the network doesnt allow two DHCP servers. So its off, and the router is now used as a (wireless) switch, with the network cable from the dorm in the first ethernet port, instead of the dedikated internet port.
