car problem...

#1 Post by mattbiernat » Sat Sep 09, 2006 12:38 pm

anybody got an idea what could be wrong with my car?
i got my breaks changed 3 months ago, and yesterday suddenly i heard a loud click noise when braking and the car stopped suddenly. then afterwards every time i break i hear a dull noise (like metal against wood noise) in the rear left side of the car. now every time i break it takes longer for the car to stop and the hand break doesn't work that well anymmore.
this car has to last for 5 more days until im done with my finals. any idea how serious this could be?

It seems to me that the repair people did a very poor job. Either the pads were not properly installed and secured or the ABS was mucked with improperly. Brakes are an obvious safety feature, and if you are unable to take it in for service, consider not driving it until you can. ... JD Hurst

First, they are not "breaks" they are "brakes."

From what you describe, that thing is in very dangerous condition.

Sounds to me like a retainer pin or some other important part came loose and bent or broke against the wheel.

DO NOT drive the car until you get someone who is qualified to inspect the thing. Is there no guarantee of work from whoever did the work?

Kind of sounds like one of your pads completely popped out, or at least the asbestos pad might have broken away from the metal part from a bad rivet job or just plain cheap replacements.

You have been lucky so far, so definately take it back via a tow truck.

ehh sorry i can't spell. yes i talked to the mechanic that did my brakes and i could probably get it fixed for free, the problem is that he lives 50 miles from where i live. so..
1. i could drive the car - i mean the front brakes are working... what could possibly go wrong? - this might be a stupid question. and i would get the brakes fixed for free.
2. get the car towed to that place - i have AAA but i would still have to pay extra i think
3. pay out of my own pocket and fix it locally.

EDIT: never mind - im towing the car to the nearest mechanic. thanx everyone for your help as i don't know much about cars.
