Looks like HP is reacting to Dell's purchase of Alienware. I don't like overpriced gaming PCs much, but there are really good margins to be had in such boxes.

Will competition push down their prices? :? I hoped to get a laptop built only for gaming purposes.

I read the article on Notebook and Laptop Reviews site yesterday. I am not a gamer so I was interested in just what this is all about.

The article included some links to Voodoo PC, so just for kicks I went there and WOW! I was really surprised at how much they charge for their laptop gaming machines! The margins are astronomical! It was reported that 60% of the machines they sell are laptops.

The article was quite interesting as was the additional article all about the company. If it's to be believed then one does get a hand built, high quality laptop. However at those prices you would certainly expect world class service and a good product. Astounding.

Oh, I wouldn't be so sure about world class support and the frills that go along with paying alot. At the very worst, and this goes for most of the specialty gaming PC companies, you get overcharged for something that you could have built yourself while the service is either mediocre or non-existent. If one is a really dedicated gamer, it is often most desirable, and cheaper, to build your own system; and added benefit is that you get warranties on most of the parts individually and you know *exactly* how they all fit together as a whole.

For business and research applications, I can't really see Alienware, Voodoo, or Falcon Northwest laptops being applied too well. :)

I am not a gamer either. However I do subscribe to Maximum PC, which reviews high-end rigs like Voodoo's. It makes one drool to read about all this bleeding-edge technology put in some of these gaming rigs. Once a year Maximum PC puts together a Dream Machine PC of their own using all the ultimate components. The price can exceed $10,000 on this Dream Machine. After they put it together, then they benchmark it and give their impression of the whole rig. 8)

I have to admit that even though I still get the magazine, I have not been keeping up with it. Blame forum.thinkpads.com.
