#1 Post by ambientscape » Sat Oct 14, 2006 4:05 pm

I can't seems to update my Internal Virus Database.......It shows that I have an outdated version but whenever I click to update it says I have the latest version and try again later.
Now my AVG remain in grey colour......

If it still doesn't work via the automatic updater within AVG. try downloading it manually and then installing it after waiting for the serverload to come down. :)

AVG Free is working fine for me. Do as the above poster has said, download and install the update manually.

I had this same problem awhile back. I tried all the things you've mentioned but it didn't help me either. Unfortunately, I can't recall now how I resolved the situation... aren't I a lot of help!

Have you done a complete uninstall before loading the latest setup file, perhaps it's just updating rather than reinstalling. You might also try changing the download server that it's trying to get the update from, it seems that there are several choices around the world.

I can tell you that mine is working fine these days, so there is a light at the end of your tunnel. Recovery takes time... think of it has a twelve-step program... we'll be your support group.

I installed it on a guys laptop friday night.

An interesting thing happened to a guy at work though he installed in on a PC on our network and it has been running for over a year, one day he came up to me telling me when it tried to update he got a message saying "you are part of a corporate network which violates the license agreement, cannot update" this is a paraphrase of what i saw when the updater started. Very interesting, have not seen or heard anyone else with that problem even here.

I had that message a few weeks ago, but it was more a suggestion that I may be using it on a corporate network, and it encouraged me to buy the network version. I have a domain server at home, so it might have become a little confused.

Yeah, that is kind of what I was thinking also since we have a domain controller at work. It sure would not allow him to update though, how about you?

I was able to update but every bootup I would get the message advising me to purchase AVG network edition. I uninstalled AVG Free and am actually thinking seriously about buying a subscription - it's cheap compared to Norton and lasts twice as long (2 years).

Also better update servers, more configuration options, better detection, etc......

It's also just better than Norton, Norton is one of the most bloated pieces of software itself. It's a practical joke in the computer repairs business - all these complaints of "sluggish" systems, if it's got System Works on it. It's most likely that.

AVG on the other hand is pretty light, doesn't have a big footprint, does what it needs to and no more.

Just to clarify:
The Norton home version is bloated and worthless.
Symantec corporate is a completely different animal and is not too bad.

Rather than using a mirror site, simply download it directly from Grisoft.

I saw it once and the problem was the computer clock a few days in the future... it seems AVG uses local time to figure out if it needs update, not just the update timestamp/signature. HTH

This sounds very familiar to me, I second this opinion.

AVAST it works GREAT, is FREE, has a boot option that will scan during bootup. I have purchased 2 new computers in last 6 months, both had Norton. 1st thing I did was disable Norton and delete it from HD, then install AVAST, run the boot scan option. On one of the computers it detected a virus in one of the OEM files, that computer had not been exposed to the internet, it was a brand new HP.

AVG update workinf here fine too.

Since I switched to AVG free (1,5 years ago I think) I never had any troubles with virusses anymore.

About the clock issue: reminds me of the time when I discovered that both Norton AV and Paint Shop Pro trials worked when turning back time after trial version ended... (2 years ago I think, probably fixed now)
