What is so special about the Model M's?

I've never used one, so I dont know, but can anyone fill me in as to what is so special about the Model M's?

EDIT: Well, this was supposed to be a reply to a Model M for sale in the Marketplace section, no clue how it got here. The question remains, though, why are the Model M keyboards?
