Need a spare system

#1 Post by RUSH2112 » Mon Oct 30, 2006 12:49 am

I want to buy a spare computer to use in addition to my X60s. I want something with a bigger screen and maybe a bit more power for use while at home. Heres what I've been thinking of:

Thinkpad R60 C2D: ~ $1100-1200
Benefits: Can be used as a spare laptop incase anything happens to my X60s, decent specs, its a Thinkpad

Cheap Dell C2D Notebook: ~ $700-900
Benefits: Cheaper than the Thinkpad, and quality doesnt matter so much since it will mostly just sit at home (but can still be used as a spare in case of emergency)

C2D 17" Apple iMac: ~ $1100
Benefits: I would have a Mac at home, so I have multiple platforms which I can use, compact (would be good for college next year), pretty decent specs for cheap

Self-Built C2D Desktop + 19" LCD: ~ $1200
Benefits: Better specs than any of the previous, bigger screen, more expandable, I would be able to optimize it for Gentoo

What do you guys think? Any other suggestions? I'm really all over the place as to which way to go here. I know I need another computer, I'm just not too sure what to get.

I strongly urge you to get something with at least a UXGA display, or even a WUXGA display. I would recommend the Z61p, which is around $1,600, or a 24" LCD monitor if you are going to get a desktop computer. A 19" LCD has only 1280x1024 or 1440x900 resolution, which is too low for me.

An R60 or Z-series with a large, high res. display is a solid choice. And it's still portable for moving throughout the house.

You may even be able to use the same AC adapter for the X, R and Z.
