I used to collect the IBM subnotebooks, which meant having a 500, 510, 701, 560, and 240X. I don't consider myself a Thinkpad collector anymore, but I've still got the 500, 701 and the X30 I'm writing this on, in addition to a 600X. Then there are the 3 Sony laptops I have (original 505, a Picturebook VPK I use for travel as it weighs a kilo, and an R505). I play with the 701 every once in a while, but primarily use the X30 and Picturebook.

ThinkPads are great.

Just bought a lot of computers at a local state agency auction. We ended up with 6ea T20s, 10ea 600x, 8ea 600e, 3ea 390e, 2ea 240, and a neat little x21 that I am currently using.

Alpha...PM me...I cringe every time I see the 32MB of RAM posted with your 166 speed 380. I know I have an older 32MB piece laying around...and maybe even a 64MB piece. They're yours...just PM me with your street address...hell, I'll even pay for the shipping. These Thinkpads can be upgraded to 80MB of RAM...and will run much smoother with more than the 32MB you have in it. Merry Christmas

I now have two ThinkPads, so my vote, which I cast a few weeks ago, is no longer accurate.

My 760E holds two hours, now if only I could get the [censored] computer to run reliably and without IRQ issues, that battery life would be useful to me.

4 730T's (various models originally loaded with PenPoint, reloaded with 95 on a 128m cf module, all sharing one pen)
1 600E (2645-55U)
1 A31P (2653-H4U)
...and one on the way which I wont count (yet)

Those 730T's would be used a bit more if I could get Linux working on them, and if they could hold a charge. Right now, the working one just sits in the docking bay with another in a converted field kit.

The 600E still chugs along quite well for it's time, just that I'm spoiled from the A31P's screen or it's a bit blurry.

At eCS Site?

#42 Post by BigWarpGuy » Mon Jan 10, 2005 4:21 pm

I will have to check the eComStation site to see what it is. I have it on my desktop computer. The desktop has 128 meg ram, 700 mhz AMD Athlon, 20 gig hard drive. I am unable to get it installed on my newest Thinkpad which is a 760EL. I am hoping to get a newer one to try it on (perhaps a 600 or 770 from http://www.ebay.com where I won the bids on the ones I have now).

Alpha & others,

With so many TPs what do you you use them for? Do you use them regularly? Or are they liek toys that you take out once in a while to play with them?

I am just wondering because what can you do with those old TPs.

May be it would be nice to have them around the house to constantly display weather or other information. etc...

Have a T22

#45 Post by asiafish » Mon Feb 28, 2005 7:02 pm

I have a T22 in excellent shape, maxed out with 512MB ram and a (slow) 30GB hard drive. I used to have an X21 but sold it last year to buy my PowerBook.

I will be deployed with ther reserves to Afghanistan later this year, and will either install a fast 7200 RPM drive in my T22 or just bite the bullet and get a new T42, really depends on how many games I want to bring and whether or not there are Macintosh versions of the ones I want. If Mac games are sufficient, then I'll just upgrade the solid old T22, but if there is something new and exciting that I just have to play, hopefully I'll find a good deal on a nice 14" T42 with the Thai keyboard and Sony battery and get a good price for a very clean T22.

My full height 760E, now that I've replaced the mWave DSP with the ESS sound card and upgraded the CPU to a Pentium MMX, thus making it essentially a 760XL, I use it on a daily basis at school to type on and play games on as well as MP3's.

The 380ED, I'm letting a friend borrow, he uses it for the same thing I use my 760 for.

My thin height 760E sits on my desk in the docking station most of the time, it's that computer that I can't think of any reason for keeping, but refuse to get rid of anyway.

The 755CD sits in my closet since the voltage circuitry is shot and the computer will run only off the battery, the charger won't work with it and my 600E sits next to it since it's motherboard is shot. Maybe for these two computers, I'll copy the lady who put a boot through her screen and managed to sell it on eBay for over $50.00 by calling it art. :)

EDIT - 04/03/05, 12:06AM: Well, I'm now down to three ThinkPad's. I gave the 755CD and the 600E to another forum member in exchange for some functional parts and a few screens including a brand new one. I'm also in the process of building a third 760 which would put me back at owning 4 ThinkPad's, I just need a hard drive and a few plastic bits.

I have 4 380z Thinkpads

#47 Post by BillsR100 » Tue Dec 18, 2007 10:06 pm

I bought 4 380z Thinkpads at a school surplus auction, got them for $35 each, including case, ac adapters, ethernet cards, car 12v adapters. I'm posting this on one that I have installed Windows XP on, with 96MB ram, wireless connection. and... this is my very first post on this site. :)

R51 1829-L7G with 15" SXGA+ FlexView, the only reason I still keep this one (including extending warranty as long as possible) is the display. I'd never thought it will be such problem to buy a new notebook with at least similar display quality :x

X31 2672-CXU refubrished via usanotebook. I just wanted to try that size. After few months I really like it (I don't need DVD drive), except the display. If there was an X model with better display resolution and quality and the same (preferably NMB) keyboard I'd buy it immediately as a main notebook.

R40, T21, 600e, and 600 are currently in use by Me, wife, backup, and daughter. The others (600e) in my sig are used by dad, brother and sister. The reason the stable keeps growing is "addiction" The first step to recovery is knowing you have a problem...When do the TPAnnonymous meetings start??

Just my T42 at the moment - several times this year I've had up to 3 TPs at the same time, but as great as it is to have a secondary system to play around with, I've had to back it off so I can afford more immediate things (such as the car I bought last month).

not for sale:

A31p

for sale:

R50p
A22p
A30p

Hanging in limbo: R40...

Yeah, I know...I should really stick with buying ThinkPads only when I really need a new machine...

I currently have about 17 in my posetion....all bought on E-bay.

........Hi, my name is Nigel and I am addicted to Thinkpads & E-bay  ........

Here is my current inventory:

1 x 390 (bought a 600E, but seller sent me the wrong one :()
2 x 600
5 x 600E
2 x 600X
4 x T20
1 x T21
2 X T22
1 X t23

I had a steal of a deal on a P4 A31 for $100, but my co-worker wanted it, so I flipped it to him.

I use my 600X mostly as it has all my stuff on it already. Slowly migrating some of it to the T23. The rest will be moving on to new homes as laptops for kids to play with, to use as diagnostic tools for cars, or as portable DVD players.

My high was 8, but I'm down to three. A 14" widescreen R61 that my associate uses (until I sell it and get her a Mac), a T42 for my paralegal and a 600E that currently sits in my desk drawer, and should soon find a new owner.

I love ThinkPad hardware, but I've absolutely HAD IT with Windows. As each of my PCs and my server end their life cycles they will find new or used Macs in their place.

Currently I'm down to two. I've owned four at one point in time. Two T23's, one 380z & one T20. My first T23 I got from craigslist for $75 because it didn't work (inductor problem.) Second T23 was from eBay and that had the inductor problem as well, that one is my mom's system. The 380z was from a friend I upgraded to a 570e. The T20 I got from another forum because it had a CRC1 error which I fixed. The 380z was sold to a member here and the T20 was sold on craigslist to fund my Nokia 770 purchase. Just the two T23's remain. Eventually I'd like to get a 570e for myself.
