Trying to LAN with friends, Network Adapter Unplugged?

#1 Post by Musashi445 » Wed Nov 29, 2006 12:40 am

Ok, so I was trying to play Neverwinter Nights over a lan hub with my friends. They all connected fine and it was working. When I connected my cable to the hub, they all started to lag, and my computer would say "network cable unplugged"

I would disable and enable it over and over and it would still say it was unplugged, yet it would cause lag to everyone else until I unplugged.

I have no idea how to fix this. We tried it with multiple ethernet cables, and I also restarted my computer...

I'm using the T60 series (had this posted in the T60 forum til it was moved) and I have no idea what a NIC card is or how to find out which i'm using.

do you have a firewall on or some sort of Windows deal. when i try to network with friends over a hub windows firewall tries to block outside programs from working. make sure you UNBLOCK the game or whatever you are trying to network.

Was it really a passive hub, or was it an active switch?

If a switch, what type?

Sounds like a bad nic or a bad cable or you got the bad port on the hub.

Or possibly you are plugging into an "uplink" port.

Shouldn't the autosensing nic in the T60 take care of that?

Not sure of the specs/capabilites of the T60... I was only going with my experience in trying to debug a network connectivity problem I had with a network camera one time. Turns out I had two unrelated issues: a bad ethernet cable AND I was plugging into an uplink port! Can the T60 be used with either a straight-through or crossover cable?

There has been some issues with slow ping times with the intel card in the t60, try updating everything it helped mine out a little.
I'll find the thread referencing this issue.

http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.php?t=30393

This was happening to me and causing severly slow connection issues to other machine via crossover and through the network.
After pinging for about two miunutes the ttl's would start to normalize, this may be causing your machine to have a hard time connecting to the NIC's on the other machines on the same hub/switch.

And yes Ray the NIC on the T60 is autosensing so you really don't need a crossover to connect to anything straight through, or the uplink port.

Your not plugging in to an older model cisco router are you?

I wasn't absolutely sure about the autosensing nic on the T60 but I am sure about it on my T42 and it surely would be continued on the T60.

I really know next to nothing...

The router we were using seemed like it was meant for XBOXes, but it worked just fine with their computers. And they were all playing just fine, but when I plugged mine it, my computer was acting like there was no plug, yet the three of them would recieve extreme lag.

I plugged into every port on the HUB, and I used different cables, so I have no idea what was wrong...

Have you tried using the network connection at any other time?

What do you mean? I can connect just fine to any other port, even to my PS2, but not through the HUB oddly enough.

This is the first HUB I ever connected to, so I don't know if it is HUBs in general, or just this one. My router at home worked fine though...

One of the steps in the network troubleshooting tree is to contact the vendor of the hardware you are using, I suggest a visit to the web site of the device you are plugging in to and look for FAQ's/Troubleshooting/"contact company X"/ whatever, there may be known issues there.

It's possible (though not likely in this case!) that it could be a duplex mismatch. If the Ethernet adapter on your ThinkPad has been configured for full (or half) duplex rather than autodetect, that can cause havoc with some hubs, similar to what you described, while still working fine with others.

But unless you have changed the Ethernet configuration, it should be set to autodetect.

I think I might have when I came to college, I had to do some things to get my laptop connected to the schools internet. That was a while ago though, how can I check?

Start > Settings > Network Connections > Local Area Connection

Right-click it and select Properties
Click on the Configure button next to the network adapter hardware
Click on the Advanced tab

Now, dependign on your adapter, look for the duplex setting in the list of items you can configure.

Well, it was set to 100Mbps/Full Duplex

When I changed it to autodetect, My internet stopped working. I go the University of Pittsburgh, and we had to install all sorts of special things to get onto the Pitt network. Not only that, if I ever unplug from the internet I have to restart my computer just to get back on. I had problems connecting before, and when I called the help desk, they told me to put it on 100/Mbps/Full Duplex, and that fixed it.

Well, I guess now thats affecting my ability to use the HUB.

I'll try switchng to auto-detect next time I go to my friends room and using the HUB, and see what happens.

You could also check whether your friend's hub is able to be set to 100 Mbit/full duplex as that would fix the problem from the other end. :)
