does anything like this exists?! usb to lan adapter

#1 Post by dorin » Tue Dec 05, 2006 10:01 am

so, i need to plug in the usb cable and on the other side to have a lan cable i insert into the computer (the only way to add mass storage to an old computer with usb 1 and no pcmia, or pci option)

i know there are plenty to make a lan card to connect via usb but viceversa?!

thanks,

dorin

Linksys does, check their web site, fairly inexpensive too.

I think you guys got it backwards; what you are pointing out is ...
ThinkPad <--> USB <--> adapter <-- > Ethernet

when in fact I believe the OP is looking for
ThinkPad <--> Ethernet <--> adapter <-- > USB

I am not aware of such a beastie, though.

That sounds like some kind of Network Attached Storage (NAS) supporting USB devices.

What about the Linksys NSLU2, then?

Yes ... provided it's hard disk storage that he wants to attach.

But if he wants to connect a memory stick, a CompactFlash reader, a fingerprint reader or a DVD burner, that doesn't really help.

Maybe the original poster could clarify?

hi guys,

thanks alot for the replies and blame the time difference for not replying till now!

so what i need is as tomh009 said a thing to do
ThinkPad <--> Ethernet <--> adapter <-- > USB

i'm aware of the enclosures with ethernet but i found about it abit later, after i've bought the 500gb hdd (WD Mybook) - it was a promotion so i just bought it without checking what's else on the market.

so the pb is that the usb's 1 speed is slower than the download speed, i cannot get it write on the hdd faster than 130kbs though the usb wireless adapter gets a fair 400kbs (on an ancient hp e-pc 10 which i use it for torrents)

the solution i will go for is to still use the ancient's comp hdd for downloads and when all the 20gb are full i noticed that if i connect ext hdd>>>>>usb>>>>x40>>>>>ethernet>>>>ancient desktop the transfer rate is brilliant, around 1gb per minute.

kyocera can you please make one more "portrait" picture of the usb terminal? is it a male or female?

once again thanks alot for your help guys!

have a nice day (eve for guys on the new continent)

I think that what he wants is:
ThinkPad <--> Ethernet Male <--> adapter <-- > USB female . I don't think this is going to happen.

That looks a lot like one of a pair of adapters that came in a "universal" USB adapter kit I bought a while back.

Basically, it and its counterpart were intended to allow a USB extension cable to be used as a CAT-5 LAN cable. The kit also came with a similar pair of USB-to-RJ11 (modem) adapters.

John, you may be correct, I shop at electronic stores like some shop at Lowes :)

Carbon Unit, really any combination is possible as there are ways to configure a rj45 male to rj45 male (this would be a cat5 cable) to female ethernet (this would be a socket or coupler that pops into the network drops in any building) then to USB or whatever. You can really make any type of connections as long as there are male and female (which there are) but wether or not it will work is the issue. I'm not sure if an ethernet port (less V) will run a usb port connection on the other end, even if wired, because the usb port is powered :? or am I wrong? Please correct.

It seems he wants to turn his ethernet port into a high speed USB port to plug his external hard drive into. I can't find anything for that.

Right, USB is powered and ethernet is not.
The USB also will need to have a root hub controller to recognize the external hard drive.
