of apples commercial about pc and mac,

it depicts windows are for non-fun individuals?? wtf
if working and bringing in the bread, or actually learning , c++ gui
programming is not fun, man those adds are seriously damaging to the psyche of teenagers in this country, when people who are keen to learn are depicts as boring.

What the hell is the add saying , that Ilife just came out of thin air??
and not because of the programmers behind it?

I am deeply offended by the commercials, I am a fun guy, when I need to be and a worker, and serious person when I need to be. not like that hipster duffus, " hey I am a mac" , well yeah " I am a baseball bat , here let me introduce you to my soft side"

Ehhh, don't worry. The commercials don't affect many of those who are actually bright enough to analyze the similarities and differences between PCs and Macs for themselves; would you really want somebody who followed a commercial to buy an expensive to feel "Cool" working on a serious project themselves? Besides, there are tons of commericals like that....most of which are actually far worse.

That reminds me of eBay auction titles with words like "Powerful laptop!", "A FANASTIC DEAL!", "The Cadillac of Laptops!", etc. These sellers can say whatever they want, but these stupid titles won't help them at all.

Real programmers know how to use gcc, so you'd have no problem writing software on a Mac. If you know what your doing, you'd have something portable for multi-platform use. And you know how to do that, you'll bring home serious money.

And no iLife didn't come out of thin air... but unlike many windows programs, it's rather hardware antagonistic. They were able to port iTunes to Windows rather quick, and have been able to cross compile between PPC and x86 without issues. Most developers with MSVC8 are still trying to figure out how to cross compile successfully and keep their code that agile.

And yes, PC people are typically boring. That's why they buy a $200 after rebate dell.. to check their Yahoo mail, and do their finances and work. That's 90% of PC computer usage. The 3 primary reasons of purchase for PC's.

Most of those who fall for the "stuffed shirt" PC- VS - "Yo dude..." commercials are on AOL anyways.

I just laugh at them, because I find them funny. Try not to look at the crap that they are selling you with the commercial.

Thing is, they don't include a little Daemon or Penguin, or even Glenda the Rabbit, in any of those commercials as users now do they?

Yes, agreed. I look forward to each new ad.

However, the ads are fundamentally misleading about two points:

1. The PC flaws they ridicule are generally those of pre-XP machines. Heck, Apple would be attacking DOS if they thought they could.
2. Nearly all gamers, and the vast majority of web surfers, youTube watchers, etc. are doing so on a PC. PC users know their machines can do more than spreadsheets.

Perhaps it is to Apple's credit that Mr. PC actually comes across as a likeable guy.

The Mac is just... different.

I find it a little confusing at times. Some things are more intuitive than others, but overall I'd say that both the Mac and a PC have their strengths and weaknesses. I don't use mine all that much; surfing with Safari or using it as a temporary storage for my daughter's iPod Nano is about all the use it has seen. One of these days, I'll going to smash you into little pieces.. oopps... sorry, got off on a Pink Floyd tangent for a moment

. Let's try that again.. One of these days, I'll going to buy a "For Dummies" book and learn how to use it efficiently. For the time being, it's sitting in the family room, collecting a thin layer of bird dust. When I've plugged it in and turned it on, it just works (sorry). Although out of the box, it had to download somewhere around 3 or 4 hundred megabytes in order to bring it up to date (much like an SP2 install!). That it did it after I configured the wireless system without any problems was pretty cool. The UI does take a little getting used to, but it's the same way when I fire up Solaris on my Sun Ultra 5. Each system looks and feels different but as long as you can get your job done, what difference does it really make?

I used to be a very anti-Mac guy, when I was just a user and hardware hound. When I got into the IT world, the hardware and the system gradually became more and more irrellivent. I just wanted the machines that were my responsibility to work and to do the work that the user needed in the most efficient way possible. I even found myself going to bat for a department that did a lot of graphics oriented work in their quest to get Macs. I just wanted to help them get their jobs done. I totally agree with rkawakami; all systems have their strengths and weaknesses so there are things they each do better than the other.

On the other hand, I do find the commercials offensive, but not for the obvious reason. I find them offensive in that the writers (and by extension, the Apple people), sinsinuate that they are smarter, and more importantly, cooler than the rest of us. An "elite" if you will. A very NYC/LA, we're more chic than you attitude.

Totally true. I listen to a radio station from San Francisco (KITS 105.3FM) that has given away iMac and MacBook systems recently and one of the DJs has been laying on the "hype" about how the Macs are so cool and can do stuff right out of the box without any additional software and about how you don't have to worry about viruses affecting the Mac, and on and on and on....

I treat all of that as a PAID ADVERTISEMENT that even though it sounds like he's delivering an unscripted speech about how he likes "his" Mac, the cynical side of me says that he's just a mouthpiece for Apple. Apple has supplied the computers to be given away as PAYMENT for promoting them on-air.

yeah I totally want get one, when i have the money, it's just the ads and their promotional strategy that left with "Whaaaa??"
Apple are like cigarette companies in the 50's are in a way,
putting their products everywhere just to be seen.

I like going to the mac stores though, just to touch play around, but what i ussually do , is do tons of research first , and then ask ridiculous questions the sales person.

One of the best response I got was, " I would know I have been using them for years" , I wanted to reply "And here you are working in an apple store for YEARS", but the constanza syndrome came down on me , and held my mouth shut.

Agreed. The problems isn't Macs--they're perfectly fine machines.

The problem is Mac users--or rather, Mac fans, and the entire Mac aura that Apple has sold the world on.

Of course, I've heard some accusations that Thinkpad owners are a snooty bunch too.

I've been wondering if referring to them as Macintoshes would cramp their style at all.

The metrosexual image that Apple has been trying to cultivate has actually become sort of a running joke among my friends. Three of us are PC users. He used Macintosh. He won't let us come with him to buy stuff for his Mac because we aren't trendy dressers and he's afraid we wouldn't be allowed in the store (he is joking, of course).

As for the commercial, I do take a bit of offense at the characterization of PC users. Contrary to what some watching the commercial might be led to believe, many of us work out and have copious amounts of self-confidence.

Perhaps the worst musical genre yet, with the possible exception of Hardcore Gangsta Rap; but I digress...

Although I must admit that there are quite a few veteran Mac users that complained heavily about the switch from OS 9 to OS X (10) and what has become a rather serious shift in hardware strategy from the Macs, oh excuse me...Apples, under Gil Amelio.

I kinda go back and forth on the ThinkPad thing a little (very little), but I'll use an analogy about a belief that I developed about BMWs years ago. I always loved the engineering of German cars. I owned VW rabbits and GTIs, then moved on to 4-door Audis. But I came into some luck one day when I ran across 1 of the first series BMW M5s in Lubbock, Texas of all places. These were the original ones that were only imported in 1988 and you could have it in any color as long as it was black. Orginally sold for $49,999 in 1988 dollars. This was 1997, and in Lubbock, so it was at a price I could afford!

But I waffled back and forth, wrestling with the whole image of the snotty BMW owner and it being a college town, most were bought by the well-heeled moms and dads. But it was such a good deal, I bought the thing anyway. Subsequently, I moved to New Orleans and the car became my hobby (much like ThinkPads now). Again after much hand wringing, I joined the BMW Car Club of America (BMWCCA). I found out very quickly that by and large, it was made up of a bunch of "regular" guys that loved the engineering and function of these cars, that just wanted to get together to learn and share information. Very much like the Forum members here.

I learned that in the end, there are always those for whom "image is everything" and they fail to see the intrensic value of the design, engineering, and workmanship. Those people will forever be led by the nose trying fill some void with something that some highly paid marketing folks tell them that they need. Whether that be Thinkpad, BMW, Mac, or Mercedes, the product isn't the point. The point is that they don't think for themselves.

Well, I think you speak of the "Modern" Macin...Apple hardware; keep in mind that Apples used to be big old beige boxes themselves and, in their early years, were used for pretty heavy duty work most often, which went along with their price tag. There are quite a few benchmarks, as well as some common sense, that disagree with this including System Shootouts. In addition, Apple was forced to pull an ad in the UK because they were claiming they had "The fastest computers" when they couldn't provide proof of such, especially in the face of benchmarks from custom gaming rigs which used AMD CPUs. That kind of image hijacking is exactly what is going on and will continue to go on in the near future.

As a proud Mac owner all I have to say is:

I love OS X. It's great. My Powerbook G4 is an elegant machine. It's stylish and fast. It get's the job done.

As a proud MCSE and veteran of the Windows side of the coin for over 15 years:

I love Windows XP. It's great. My T41p (soon to arrive) is an elegant machine. It's stylish and fast. It will get get the job done.

Just like any mechanic or engineer, or to quote Scotty:

The best tool for the job!

Sometimes it's my Windows machine, sometimes it's my Mac. I have not drunk the kool-aid and I do not subscribe to the whole 'cult of mac aura'. I am also a proud member of the 68kMLA forums and MacAddict, and MaximumPC and ArsTechnica. What does all that make me:

A guy who loves technology and computers, whether they be old (68K macs) or new (PBG4, T41p). Someone who is comfortable with multiple OS's and can work just fine in most linux and unix environments.

I have problems with closed minded Mac zealots as well. However I have problems with closed minded PC zealots. Heck I have problems with people who are closed minded in general.

XP, Vista, OS X, OS 9, Linux, Unix, AmigaOS, whatever bring it on dude. Lay 'em out and I will select the best tool for the task at hand. I love the diversity.

To the IT guy who went to bat for the mac people at work:

I am glad you did this. Those people need the best tools they can get their hands on. For graphics and video work I believe that tool is the Macintosh.

I could go on and on but it all comes down to this:

Most of us here are the elite. We have knowledge which runs deep and pervades multiple platforms. We are people for whom computing is not just a job, but a passion. Let the AOL'ers and the Kool-Aid drinkers think whatever they want. Who do they come running to at the end of the day?
