Installing new RAM in a Presario X1000

#1 Post by kuma » Tue Dec 19, 2006 9:25 am

I have a Presario X1000 1010us and I need to add more RAM. It has 2 x 256mb, I was thinking of adding just a 1 gig chip, but that would be about $100, or adding two 512 chips. Does anyone now if this computer would run faster with two 512's? And if this is possible to remove both of the chips? Can this computer do dual channel?
And is it worth the extra $30 for the 1 gig chip?
Thanks.

Have you thought about asking a Compaq forum?

Unless youre a big power user or a gamer who insists on getting a few extra fps, you really wont notice a difference with 2x512 vs 1x1024. The single 1GB chip does make it more expandable in the future, though, and you wont need to take the keyboard off to install the second chip (If I recall, the ZT3000/X1000 have one chip on the bottom and one under the keyboard).

The Compaq X1000 does not support dual channel. You will see no noticeble difference. If you aren't going to upgrade past 1 GB(Vista will NEED MORE!!!), go with the cheapest. If you plan on going to Vista eventually, go with the 1 GB. Vista does NOT run well on my Pentium M 1.4 GHz X1000 with 768 MB of RAM(not suprising). I'm not sure how it would run with proper RAM, but the video card will probably be lacking for AERO even if you have the 64 MB card. GP
