Using an old TFT screen...

#1 Post by ian » Sun Sep 12, 2004 8:56 am

My daughters boyfriend has an old Toshiba laptop that has given up the ghost - the screen, however, still works. He'd like to try to get this working as a suplementary screen.

Assuming that we use the DVI output from a laptop, is there anyone clever out there who would be able to describe (or at least, point us in the right direction) exactly what's involved (ie; which wires!) in connecting the screen to a DVI output, and obviously powering the [censored] thing...

I'm asking a lot, but I've searched on the net and found too much stuff - it's a job to know what is useful. So, any ideas please...

Ian,

Give it up as a lost cause! Without even considering what your time might be worth to cobble this [censored] device together, you can purchase a 15" desktop LCD for less.

It's a good idea in theory, but in practice the better return on using that display would be to sell it on eBay and apply whatever funds received towards an LCD purchase.

Regards,

Well that's prety much what I thought, but I'm sure you (of all people) will understand that dealing with childrens boy/girl friends we, as parents, are completely powerless unless we have it IN WRITING from someone else that the cunning plan will or will not work...so, thanks for the required proof!

Now I can get back to ironing the carpet...
