The Playstation 3

#1 Post by DaveMackenzie » Mon Jan 22, 2007 4:00 pm

Hey guys,

Definately off topic here lol, i've just bought a playstation 3, and now i have a quest........
I currently own a DLP projector with component, s-video and vga inputs, Max resolution output 1280x1024, Now my question is, is there a way i can get a high definition image on the screen, ie some kind of device to convert hdmi into a vga signal as the resolution alone is equivalent to 720p and above, i've seen a few upscalers, and now am waiting for a response after asking the people the same question, its all because i have created a way of having a 227 inch wide screen in my room with a throw distance of only 4 meters lol so i want to see some quality and clarity in the picture, i will post pics soon aswell
I await your replies :D

You spent your money on a P$3 :?: As far as I know there is not HDMI to VGA converter. HDMI carries both audio and video in a digital signal. VGA is video only in an analog signal. Its matching apples to oranges here. Your best bet is to find the PS2/PS3 component video cable and use that to connect to your projector. Based on what your projector has as in inputs, I would say it is incapable in displaying a HD picture. Component would at least you get 480P resolution. It may be true that your projector can display 1280x1024 resolution, however that is with the VGA input which is not High-Def since it is analog and not digital. HD picture can only be carried through a DVI or HDMI connection since both of those are digital signals.

Even if you can only get 480p, you'll notice a huge difference over 480i.

a scaler will only do so much and generally a scaler such as a DVDO will upscale the image you are outputting into the projector. I have installed and used various projectors and home theater pieces. A scaler on a PS3 on a non-high def projector is kind of a waste of money unless you plan on upgrading to high def. Generally a scaler would be used on devices such as S-VHS, DVD, VHS, so on and so forth. Granted some games on PS3 are non high-def but you really need a high def projector to fully take advantage of a scaler. But when you do put a DVDO on a nice high def projector(at least reasonably priced) like a BenQ you will really notice the difference. And, to back up dsigma6 the difference between 480i and 480p is plenty noticeable.
