Which Is Faster - 16MB Cache/5400RPM or 8MB Cache/7200RPM

#1 Post by jamiphar » Wed Jan 31, 2007 2:34 pm

I've been looking around for another 80-100GB laptop drive and was wondering which ones would be the fastest.
I would think that 7200RPM drive would generally be faster, but if a 5400RPM drive has twice the cache, would there be much of a difference?

If you look at this HDD chart on Tom's Hardware Guide, you'll see that both of the 16MB HDDs don't perform that fast.
Microsoft Surface 3 (Atom x7-Z8700 / 4GB / 128GB / LTE)
Dell OptiPlex 9010 SFF (Core i3-3220 / 8GB / 8TB); HP 8300 Elite minitower (Core i7-3770 / 16GB / 9.25TB)

Interesting. I suppose the cache wouldn't help too much unless you're just writing files smaller than 16MB at a time. Maybe it would consume less power?
