Panasonic Toughbook factory guide - great article

Just looking at the torture-testing makes me cringe. I had a chance to observe a cop using a Panasonic toughbook inside the campus last week, and was very impressed with that laptop. The screen was crystal clear and very, very, visible /readable at 1.00 PM in the afternoon - on a battery. I wonder how bright it would look indoors. And ah, the thing weighs a ton (alteast for me!). I introduced myself to the cop and after having explained my fascination, I requested him to let me lift the toughbook. I am sure I'll die of backache if someone asks me to carry it and walk for a few miles. My heart skipped a beat when the cop just closed the display and stood on the laptop, smiling at my reaction. The machine was ROCK SOLID (no other laptop deserves that adjective, seriously). This article has made me respect these tough sob's even more (pardon my usage :))

I accidentally trod on my 600X years ago, didn't faze it in the least.

I can't think of any current model I'd want to try that on today, but I will share the tale of walking into my wife's office awhile ago and finding her reclined in her chair, chatting on the phone, with her feet up on her docked T42!

No harm other than to my blood pressure.

The CF-30 I had as a demo....

I dropped it from a 3 foot table..into a concrete floor...RESULT...a little scratch on the impact area

Then one of my coworkers was about 4 feet away and his back towards me, I yelled "john" catch...and tossed the laptop in his direction...as planned...he turned around...and in amazement looked as the laptop bounced about three times on the floor...yes, you could tell that an impact happen by LIGHT scratching/scaring of the material on the case BUT NO CRACKS!! and the laptop worked just fine...

I did drop (in multiple runs) about 3 liters ~ 1 gallon of water on the keyboard and LCD while the laptop was on...and NOTHING...

I did (hope PANASONIC never reads this) dissasemble the unit and noticed some buildup of "corrosion" (white powder like-from aluminum corrosion) on some of the metal to metal contact parts..but there was no water intrusion into the main motherboard components.

There is a company called RUGGEDBOOK that seems to be BETTER than Panasonic....these laptops are FULLY submersible, something the MIL-SPEC toughbooks are NOT!!

If anyone is interested I can provide a good place to buy "retired" Toughbooks from...Panasonic sells the leased stuff back to them and they refurbish them, only place that PANASONIC recommends for the purchase of used/refurbished ToughBooks (since there are a lot of things that must be correctly assembled for it to be MIL-SPEC) also keep in mind that the RUGGED line is the ONLY Toughbook series that is MIL-SPEC..and subject to drops and heavy use/abuse!!!
