At the price range and size you are looking for, most people recommend the Canon SD600.

Take a look at the Olympus SP-320...doesnt look too bad for the price http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/specs/O ... _sp320.asp

I have an Olympus DSLR (E-500), and I love it. I'd imagine their point and shoots are gonna be pretty good as well.

I am happy with the Canon SD600. The most important avdantage of this cam is its speediness! Very fast and reactive, perfect snapshot camera. cost at amazon.com $ 213.-

Only one minus point and thats the flash, which has a small angle and works something like a spotlight (edges are darker). But thats a common known issue on cameras with this size.

If you wanna put it into your pocket without a extra sleeve, go for the SD630, it has a harder plastic on its bigger screen (only if you do not depend on an optical viewfinder).

I have the Canon SD550. Its a great little camera, my only issue with it is the zoom and focus are locked when making a movie.

I covered it in gaffers tape to improve the grip. Some have managed to crack the large LCD on the camera's back, so some TLC is needed, like not putting the car keys and the camera in the same pocket.

I recommend getting an extra battery if you buy a compact Powershot, as it is proprietary.

They are a proprietary form factor, but compatible batteries are readily available on eBay starting at around $10.

The Canon SD600 is by far one of the best cameras for the price range. The ONLY downside I have noticed about the SD600 has to do with accessories. The underwater case for the camera is really nice (if you are into that kind of stuff) but, do not under any circumstances drop or bump the camera sharply. Because of the fit in that case it tends to flex and pinch the camera in a way it's not supposed to and it will kill the LCD on the back. A friend of mine and I did some kayaking this summer and the LCD took a dive on the camera after a bump by another kayak.

The photo quality on the camera is amazing, it almost rivals my Canon DSLR that I have for clarity and color balance.

For underwater use, the Canon underwater cases are fabulous value. I have been diving for the past three years with an S30, and it takes great photos -- although it's only three megapixels, so I recently acquired an almost-new S70. Just need to get the underwater case for that one, too.

I would also recommend the SD600; the one I had for a little while was a *superb* little camera. The same goes for much of the SD line from Canon in the first place. :)
