Make XP look like Vista (or OS X)

#1 Post by Stargate199 » Sat Feb 17, 2007 11:43 am

Searching the net, I have found two things that can fool your friends. First make Windows XP look like Vista. Go to http://www.windowsxlive.net and download Windows Vista Transformation Pack 6.0. Install what you want and you have Vista! I do recommend setting a system restore point because the uninstall may not get rid of everything. YES, you get AERO GLASS effects (except windows flip), but I do recommend a dedicated graphics card to run the visual effects. My computer had problems.

Now for OS X, Google Fly A Kite OS X. I can't remember the developer's website, but goole that and you should find it. This is the same thing, a transformation pack. This program will set a store point for you. You do not get spotlight search, or expose. This is a good way to fool your friends that your computer runs OS X.

Note: Both of these programs will work on WINDOWS XP ONLY!

That's so cool! I don't really have a need for it, but does anyone really? Thanks for the info regardless. In one of my more perverse moments I may decide to OS X-ify my T40!

Sounds fun! I will give it a try.

UPDATE: I tried it but didn't like the result, so I uninstalled it.

After uninstalling this Transformation Pack, I did one thing that made my XP look more like Vista: I downloaded Vista's default "Mountain" wallpaper and used it to replace XP's default blue wallpaper. It's such a beautiful picture.

If you want to install just the sidebar, instead of installing the Transformation Pack, you can try http://www.thoosje.com/ .

I use the Yahoo Widgets Engine instead of a sidebar. Like it a lot better because there are more widgets. It can be a memory hogger, but I have ample RAM for the program.

The auction ended with buy it now. How sad is that?

I run VTP6 on my SFF box at home. It succeeds in attempting to look like Vista, but now that I have Vista Ultimate on my T41p (typing this from it right now) I can say that it does a good job of attempting to look like Vista. I still run it because it looks better than the default themes and in 2007 there is no reason I should be running the classic theme. I have a video card with 512mb of RAM that sits idle most of the time, it should be used.

Both Fly A Kite and Vista Tranformation caused my machine to slow down. I think I can do without it.

I tried VTP for a day or 2 - it's not bad, but I had issues with the sidebar and the aforementioned system slowdowns. The Black Royale is a much better looking alternative that preserves performance.

Now the Fly a Kite OS X I have installed at the moment, and I quite enjoy it! There are a few little things I had to add such as replica for the Finder bar and their file manager, and a theme for Firefox, but aesthetically I think it looks really good. It seems just a little bit slower, but not to the degree that I'd rush to restore my regular XP settings. And my thoughts last year of buying a second hand iBook to play around with are sort of returning.

I have a set of 52 "Vista" wallpapers. Some of these are from the OS, but I can't confirm all of them. If anyone is interested in this set, PM me with you e-mail address and I will send you the pack.
