Heat, heavy use and hard drives -- more than meets the eye

Google apparently did a fairly extensive study to see the effect of heat and extended use on its hard drives. This BBC story gives an overview. I imagine there are more details to be found ... by Googling.

I never would have thought that higher temps are better. My server drive and desktop drive run about 80.

My server drives typically run between 40C and 50C, depending on the particular case they are in. Moat rackmount cases are designed with positive air pressure and lots of fans drawing high volumes of air past the disk drives to keep them (and the CPUs) cool.

Quite coincidentally, my X31's hard disk is at 45C as well. 8)

before reading the article, i was always of the mind that EVEN temps were more important..
turning hardware on and off in the old days would vary the temp and could actually "walk" a chip out of its socket..

running equipment continously has always been better..

now i will look at the article.. :)

My drives usually run 36-40C. One time, I did have a drive get as cool as 40Farenheit ... it was very cold in the room.
