What cellphone do you use?

#1 Post by schen » Wed Feb 21, 2007 1:48 pm

I don't think I've seen a thread on this. There've been ones on PDA, of course ThinkPads, but not this so I'm curious as to what others use and why.
Family Daily Drivers- T430s, T530, X220
Work- Sadly, the ThinkPads have gone away...... and replaced by HP ProDesk SFF drone machines :(
Other Projects- Edge 15, Z61m (Titanium)
Historic Retired ThinkPads- T42p, X20, A31p, 701c, 760XD, WorkPad C505

I love my Motorola Timepport. It is just a phone - nothing more. I like it because I have dropped it many times (*many* times) with no problems. It just runs and runs. It is getting old (/me sniffs sadly) and I do not see a reasonable replacement (drop on the concrete floor to be essential in a replacement). ... JD Hurst

WHY? They lack wifi and have a square screen. Go with a PPC6700!

Because it is the same one that I have been using for quite some time.

For now, I have a Dell Axim X51v that has all the wi-fi that I need. Ultimately, I would like the Treo, so that I can carry just one thing around instead of two.

Wife's phone: Motorola Timeport P7389, which despite its name, doesn't keep good time (gains several minutes/day). Otherwise, a good simple phone. Only other problem is the charging port at the bottom has fallen out. Previous phone was an Ericcson 'candy-bar' (CF388?) whose antenna keep getting bent up.

Mine: Motorola V120c. Has worked fairly well for several years but now seems to be getting 'deaf'. Doesn't work at home or work (when it used to). Got it only because I lost the previous phone. Previous one is a "caveman phone" (so say the daughters) from Qualcomm (QCP-2700). Still works; gets a signal where the Motorola doesn't. Found it in the wife's van under the driver's seat about 8 months after I got the V120c. Charged it back up and seems to be running fine.

Younger daughter: Sony/Ericsson Z500a. A solid phone. Been dropped many times, still surprised the top half is connected the way she flips it open. Upgrading in a couple of months to something with a keyboard since she uses it more for texting than calls.

Older daughter: Can't remember what she's using now; I think it's the third one. They've been replaced more for 'cool' new functions than for them breaking. Latest one was selected mainly for Bluetooth capability.

No, I was answering your "Why?" question. I use the 8910 (totally different from the ppc6700), because I have had it for a while and haven't had a need to upgrade.

A Motorola Q Smartphone, which replaced a Treo 650, which replaced a Motorola MPX200.

I didn't look at the PPC-6700 or Cingular 8125 because I want the device to be a phone first, and the Q is. Moto's priorities for this model seem to be for it to be a phone first, then a data device, and then a PDA.

I also have a Dell Axim X50v and a Palm LifeDrive.

I've provided handheld and GPS device tech support for the last four years so I've had to know a little bit about a LOT of different devices. The company provided the last two phones. This one was my own choice.

Currently I am using a Nokia 6102i. I like the features, but I can hardly hear the thing. I am often in a noisy environment, and I can't hear the phone ring or hear the party on the other end. I use a bluetooth headset to alleviate the problem with hearing the other party.

My previous phone was a Motorola V540 which I liked a lot. Before that a Samsung X427m which I did not like. Both died. The Motorola stopped charging it's battery, and the Samsung was dropped under water.

When I was with Nextel, I had a Motorola i60c which I thought was a very good phone. I think this is the one I liked the best.

All in all, so far I prefer the Motorola's. I could care less about a camera. In fact, I would prefer the phone did not have one. I have not tried a Sony Ericsson or LG yet. My wife had a Siemens CF62T, which she did not like very much. She is pretty happy with the Magenta Motorola RAZR she has currently.

My daughters have a Sidekick II, Samsung X497, and Nokia 3220 respectively, which they all seem to like.

Pocket PCs: iPAQ 3150, iPAQ 2215, Axim X5, Mobile Crossing, Axim X50V
Phones: MPX200, Treo 650, Moto Q
Laptops: ThinkPad T21 (company, now kaput), ThinkPad R52 (mine)
And things the company bought that I never got my fingers on include a Tapwave Zodiac II, a Sony Clie TH55, a Sony Clie UX50, a Toshiba e805, a Treo 600 and 700p, a Tungsten E and E2, and some kind of Casio. :-)

Motorola i90- i dont use it anymore but this thing is bullet proof. I framed houses and had this phone for a few years. I carried it on my tool pouch and it got beat up and dropped, you name it.

Motorola v710- first phone i had outside of nextel so of course i bought a motorola through verizon. Poor camera, slow software, but it makes an alright phone call.

Okay, this will be fun. At the moment, my cellular phone is an almost two year old Samsung SGH-X495. Before that, it was a Samsung SGH-X105. My next cell phone will probably be a Samsung as well because there phones are pretty reliale and cheap as hell if you go with their mid range or budget offerings. Great value for the money in my opinion.

For PDAs, my latest acquisition is two Zire m150s I got from Goodwill last week for $11 for both. I transplanted the battery from one into my m505 to replace it's dyingbattery and the other I now use at work since it's very light, I barely feel it in my pocket and it's care is very comfortable to hold. It's also very solid in build. I also have a Palm m505 (previous work PDA, now I use it for general use and in situations where my Zire wouldn't cut the job), a Sony Clie SJ20 and a Palm IIIxe.

Currently, I'm keeping an eye out for a working Zire 31 so if anyone has one they'd let go for cheap or for a trade, let me know! I really want something that has color and SD slot in the classic Zire form factor.

I have an HTC Excalibur (Dash). HTC makes some of the hottest phones on the market...320x240 screen, WiFi, and the loudest speaker I've ever heard on a phone.

http://buzzrun.com/2006/12/28/t-mobile- ... excalibur/ (Quick review I wrote)

My favorite phone of all time is the Nokia 8890. I'd still use it if it had an ounce of modern technology in it.

Not that anyone cares, but since I'm on howardforum.com too, here's my signature from there, the phones I've had over the years.

Buahaha... He does need a purse.

But phones etc...

Currently I carry the MotoQ. Previously I had a Motorola E815 that I hacked to hell and abused to the max... That phone survived multiple drops, flood waters, being thrown, etc. I had the chance to upgrade so I did... the E815 the started to fail... so I shot it. .40 cal did it wonders.

I also own an Axim X51v that I have in my car hooked to a Kenwood TM-D700a for APRS use. It also does GPS, mapping, music and movies for traveling.

As you know, I too have an X51v PDA in addition to my free cheapo cell phone. But I prefer to keep them seperate. When I don't need a PDA, I can leave the X51v at home, so I don't have to carry an expensive smart phone all the time, which could get lost or stolen.
