Any recommendations for a good Webcam?

#1 Post by tfflivemb2 » Sun Mar 04, 2007 9:37 pm

I am looking for a nice webcam that will work well as a webcam, and also store high quality video (ie. no jumps or pixelation.

I am not looking to spend more than $50-75, and will most likely turn to eBay for a better camera, if a highly recommended camera comes along.

Lenovo makes a pretty hip looking webcam for just a few more dollars than $75.

Logitech is where most people turn to when quality is required:

Logitech is what I was thinking about going with, but then I saw that they have like a hundred different models.

I think I have narrowed it down to either: QuickCam Pro for Notebooks or Quickcam Pro 5000

Initially, before I realized that there was a Pro version of the Quickcam for Notebooks, I was looking at the Quickcam Deluxe for Notebooks, but I was worried about recorded video, and whether or not it would be of the highest quality.

I really want the video to look almost like it was recorded with a Digital Camcorder.

I read on the internet several ways to connect my JVC Digital Camcorder to my computer/laptop, but none of the suggestions worked, because my R40 only recognized the camera, when it was in memory mode.

As far as quality is concerned, I think camcorder is good solution, albeit bulky.

does your JVC comes with 1394? I use my Sony and Canon as webcam when possible. Everybody is amazed at the quality of my "webcam". Most software will recognize your camcorder when you connect it to your computer via 1394.

Maybe that is the problem. I am connecting it via USB. My R40 does have a firewire (1394) port, so maybe I will try to pick up a firewire cable, and see if it will work.

You can get a PCMCIA 1394 card from eBay very easily. They come with 1394 cable as well. I think you can get one under $20.

My X60S comes with a 4-pin 1394 port. But it does not work with Canon. a 4pin to 4pin cable provides not power to the camcorder but a 6 pin to 4 pin cable does.

Most Sony camcorder draws power from the battery while many Canon pro camcorders draws power from laptops, thus the need of a 6 pin port.

Well, I ended up buying this one on ebay (refurbished) for about $36 shipped, instead of $99, per Logitech.

I am a big fan of the Microsoft LifeCam series.

LifeCam VX-6000

or my personal fav:

LifeCam NX-6000

I test a lot of these at work and they perform great. I really life the NX-6000 as it is tiny, 2.0 Megapixel (video) and 7.6 megpixel (photo), comes with a carry case and has a notebook clip.

The VX-6000 series is great as well, technically better specs than the NX-6000, but I still prefer the NX to it. I have noticed that most of Microsoft's hardware of late has been superb in quality. Their laser and optical mice work great. The wireless keyboards (not the ergonomic ones, as I hate split keyboards) are excellent with great tactitle feedback.
New:
Thinkpad T430s 8GB DDR3, 1600x900, 128GB + 250GB SSD's, etc.
Old:
E6520, Precision M4400, D630, Latitude E6520
ThinkPad Tablet 16GB 1838-22U
IBM Thinkpad X61T, T61, T43, X41T, T60, T41P, T42, T410, X301
