The Definitive 200 Albums - How many do you own?

#1 Post by tfflivemb2 » Wed Mar 07, 2007 1:32 pm

http://www.definitive200.com/200_list.php

Out of my 1,000+ CDs, I only own about 48 of these.

EDIT: Here is the intro from their main page:
Definitive 200
Where would you be without them?

Surprisingly, I have 36 of these in CD and Vinyl (I'm old). I'm surprised, since I replaced a lot of individual albums I had with "best of" when I got all my tapes stolen out of my car!
Family Daily Drivers- T430s, T530, X220
Work- Sadly, the ThinkPads have gone away...... and replaced by HP ProDesk SFF drone machines :(
Other Projects- Edge 15, Z61m (Titanium)
Historic Retired ThinkPads- T42p, X20, A31p, 701c, 760XD, WorkPad C505

After a quick look through the listing, I'd have to say I have somewhere around 80 to 85 of them if you include all media, e.g. open reel tape, cassette, vinyl, VHS, CD and DVD.

Yes, even Blizzard of Ozz and Eminem, I have very eclectic tastes in music.

(No, I don't have any 8-Tracks anymore, the majority of them had the foam backing behind the tape disintegrate so they've all joined the choir invisible.)

So many things wrong with that list. A definitive 200 list that doesn't include any of velvet underground, ramones, pixies, zappa, beefheart, animals, kinks, janis joplin, nine inch nails, the cure, blondie, smiths, patti smith, clapton, new order, residents, neu, stooges, my bloody valentine, faust, herbie hancock....

I have about 17 of them.

22/200 :( . 17 out of the first 100, then 5 more at the bottom of the list. Pretty evenly split between vinyl and CD.

I guess I'm not "with it" according to this list. But for a "Rock 'n Roll Hall of Fame", what's Barbara Streisand, Kenny G, the two Jacksons, Faith Hill and the Dixie Chicks doing on the list? And where's Eric Clapton? The Band? Allman Brothers? The Clash? I don't think I saw them anywhere, but I was quickly scanning the list.

I haven't bought many 8-tracks/cassettes/albums/CDs in my life. It's been about a year since I bought my last CDs (Incubus, Audioslave, Soundgarden, Maroon 5, Temple of the Dog; a mix of old and new). Along with my wife, we probably own about 300-400 albums and CDs. My count did not include the ones she has had since before we met, only the ones I have personally bought.

I listen to "Classic Rock" and "Alternative Rock", which is how I get my musical fix. 13 months ago the local alt-rock station switched format to "La Romantica" (Spanish easy listening is how I've heard it described). Just last week, it flipped back to alternative. That made my year! I was the owner of savechannel1049.com (find a copy of it at The WayBack Machine), which I let expire back in January.

A definitive 200 list that doesn't include any of....
but does include Jewel at 64?

I quit when I got there. Have 1/2 of them to that point. Rolling Stone did a much better job of putting together lists of "essential" albums

Well....if we are including vinyl and cassettes, then that would put me at 80-85, as well.

An album is an album, no matter what media it's physically on. I did not include any .MP3 files in my count, as I don't believe that those should be included unless you've used iTunes to purchase them.

Not to mention Shakira, Outkast, Eminem, the Titanic soundtrack, etc...I was on another board that discussed this list and almost everyone rubbished it because of who was missing. There is certainly some rubbish on that list, but it proves how subjective and slightly biased these lists can usually be. Generally I find that the top 10-20 are reasonable decisions, but whatever is below that is subject to rethinking.

26 of them I have, BTW

Yes, and album is an album. I was just stuck in a CD state of mind.

As for MP3 files, those shouldn't count UNLESS you DL'd the entire album. The point of the list is that they are the MUST HAVE albums.

As for whether or not certain album pop up on the list, if you click on the"Home" tab of that site, you will say that it says:

Though, I love the one error for Nevermind by Nirvana. It is listed as being 1996, but it was most certainly 1991. (September 23, 1991, to be exact)

I had a few of them, most of the older groups with albums that have been played to death and thrown out. Had every Beatles, Who, Zeppelin and Hendrix album.
I agree, lots of good stuff missing. The Hendrix album listed was weak, what about Electric Ladyland, Axis Bold as Love? No Clapton, Clash, Yardbirds, Crosby Stills and Nash, Neil Young deserves more than he got. Eagles were way down there. I'd put Who's Next above Shania Twain's album no matter what. I think some of the old blues guys got the shaft, Zeppelin covered all their songs and they are all over the chart(don't get me wrong, me and my buds wore out the Zep albums, we weren't smoking pot or anything).
I might be getting old, but all the new music sounds the same.........

Bridge of Sighs? Haven't heard that in years. Maybe I can get the local progressive rock DJ to play some of that tonight.

How about a recent guitar "god", Joe Satriani?

Actually there was one Clash album (London Calling, I think), and the Sex Pistols did make the cut. But I agree that there was a lot of fluff while a lot of truly important bands were missing. Jimi Hendrix? Depeche Mode? New York Dolls? Ramones? Neil Young?

Sheesh. (Oh yeah, I had somewhere between 20 and 25 of them.)

I loved Robin Trower in my youth 8)

Ray, we have the G3 Tour coming into Pgh. April 12 - Joe Satriani, John Petrucci and Paul Gilbert. By the way, I listen to KCSM out of San Mateo on my PDA, it is an excellent station.

Edited: I have owned 27 of those titles, most from the beginning of the list; my tastes have changed a bit, but nobody better touch my David Bowie collection

Compliments of VH1 (and Wikipedia):

The 100 Greatest Artists of Rock 'n Roll

The 100 Greatest Women in Rock and Roll

Compliments of Rolling Stone:

500 Greatest Albums of All Time

(Got most of them!)

100 Greatest Guitarists Of All Time

(Cobain and Garcia being ahead of Santana can only be explained by a sympathy vote!)

Let the discussion begin....

Jack White (White Stripes and Raconteurs) @ #17??? Come on, ahead of Mark Knopfler (27), Dick Dale (31), and Pete Townsend (50)?

What were the writers/editors at Rolling Stone smoking??? Okay, nevermind, stupid question.... :)

I couldn't agree more. I believe Carlos Santana is my favorite guitarist of all time. Carlos could make that guitar "sing". There are a handful of others in close contention though: Eric Clapton, Jimmy Page and Stevie Ray Vaughan come to mind.

Hendrix is a no-brainer, and I do very much approve of Stevie Ray Vaughn at #7, but Cobain is baffling.

And I can only characterize the positioning of Santana and Johnny Ramone next to each other as amusing! :D I think Ramones were a very important (and enjoyable!) band but one of the 20 "best guitarists?"

Well, you have to keep in mind that they are also looking at the overall popularity of the album itself. Jack White (White Stripes) created, or shall I say, recreated a new style and spawned several other bands. Their third album brought them to the mainstream, and had atleast four songs with radio airplay. EDIT: Sorry, just realized that Ray was referencing the Guitarist list....I agree!

Yes, there are far better bands, but it was the fact that they were a breakthrough band that seemed to add them to the list.

Now an interesting note...how come Christina Aguilera made the list and Britney Spears, N'Sync/Backstreet Boys didn't make the list? Not that any of them should have really made the list.

I would really love to know where exactly this list came from.

What about Tears for Fears album Songs from the Big Chair? Who didn't know the words to Shout???? Also, where are the Talking Heads...they were ground breaking?

These are reasons why I lost "faith" in all time lists like these ages ago. Although the site http://www.digitaldreamdoor.com/ has what I'd consider to be some more balanced and well researched top 100 style lists.

I think the list is some sort of odd blend of importance and popularity. And some jazz thrown in for good measure ...

But lots of important, groundbreaking artists are omitted. Looking at the list again, I see Bob Marley's Exodus -- surely one of his best albums, but one of his later ones. Nothing from Desmond Dekker, Toots & Maytals and the like, who helped define ska, rocksteady and reggae. Or, for that matter any other reggae significant albums like Steel Pulse's Handsworth Revolution or UB40's Signing Off, or Specials or English Beat from the second wave of ska, or ...

Oh well. I guess I'll have to make my own list to get it right. ;)

I suck at this.

#27 Post by SafeHarbor » Wed Mar 07, 2007 9:48 pm

Boy, I really suck at this. I've always thought that my soundtrack was in my mind - that's why I sometimes start humming songs that I haven't heard in years. At the moment, I have three CDs on hand: Johnny Cash "Man in Black," Eagles Greatest Hits Vol. II, and Don Henley "Building the Perfect Beast." If I dig around, I could probably find the Atlanta Rhythm Section and that Sultans of Swing band, whoever they were.

I do have every piece of sheet music Scott Joplin ever published (I think), and that's the music I love to listen to, too.

I've bought that Eagles music three times. Once on an eight-track in 1976, once on cassette in the 90's, and once from iTunes in 2007. I have my own opinions about whether that's fair or not.

I was thinking about them when I compiled my earlier list above. IMO, they should be listed ahead of some of the others I see in the links you posted.

Regarding the group 'Spirit' that was in my list above; they do not seem to be known by many of my acquaintances, yet note what is stated in Wikipedia regarding the album "Twelve Dreams of Dr. Sardonicus".
Wikipedia wrote:The album was finally released in late 1970. Everybody involved felt that they had created a great album and hoped that it would bring them the wide-spread success that had mostly eluded them. However, it was met (at the time) with a cool commercial response, only getting to #63 in the national charts, and was also met with critical indifference.

Time, however, would be particularly kind to the album, and it is now regarded by many as one of the finest rock albums ever made. Not unlike The Who's Tommy and Pink Floyd's "Dark Side of the Moon", it is regarded as a masterpiece of art-rock, with a tapestry of literary themes about the fragility of life and the complexity of the human experience; this is best illustrated by recurring lyric "life has just begun." However, the album is also appreciated for its songwriting quality and performances. Its inventive production and effective integration of the Moog synthesizer belied nearly every group in rock who tried using the instrument (aside from perhaps The Doors, who used a Moog on Strange Days, and were the first rock band to do so).
