Has anyone else gotten spam?

#1 Post by Stargate199 » Mon Mar 19, 2007 9:37 am

Already this morning, I have gotten two spam emails in my inbox for someone wanting to do a URL swap on this forum. The sender claims there work for a UK lighting company. Both messages have been identical. The first one was from henlaye@gmail.com, the second is from mitch34en@gmail.com. Anyone else gotten any of these today? The message I have gotten follows
Hi,

We have visited your site http://forum.thinkpads.com/ and we'd like to trade links with you.

We can offer you a VERY high quality PR3 home page. Your link will be hosted on an quality, actual content page http://www.garmin4u.com/ rather than just a spammy link page. This page gets very good internet traffic and we know that Google prefers links placed on these types of important pages, compared to "link only" pages or directories.

Our client would like you to link back to the URL http://www.gps.co.uk/ not the URL listed above. In the past, some of our link partners have expressed a preference to link back to the same URL that is linking to them. This is both unnecessary and less valuable than the 3 way linking structure that we are proposing. Google can easily detect reciprocal linking strategies as a way of manipulating search engine rankings, where as using a 3 way linking structure is much less detectable, if at all.

Please email me when you have added our link, being sure to advise the URL location of the link you have added. Also include details of the link you would like added. We'll notify after we've added your link so you can inspect it. Please use only the link details listed below for the outgoing link.

Note: UK Garmin GPS, armin avionics, bose headsets, aviation GPS

Any problems / questions let me know

you can skype me at pageone-5
If any of the Admins could help investigate this and figure out who this is, that would be helpful.

Well I did look at the first email. The one I posted was the second one. The first one is different. The basics of the email is the same but the links are different. It could be my school email has been hijacked from this forum somehow, but I would be interested if anyone has had this happen to them.

I haven't seen anything like that (although in my case, greylisting and Spamassassin stop absolutely everything dead in its tracks).

Also, so far as I can see, the emailers are not members here. So it must be guests looking through the forum.

This is the main reason why I don't publish my email in my profile.

The email account I use exclusively for this forum gets about 10 spams a day but never anything like that.....yet. I figure I get the spam from being a moderator. I never got any spam at this address before I was a moderator.

Lets hope I didn't speak too soon, but I have not gotten another one of those emails. The email address have been put on my block list. This was strange because it is the first spam I have ever gotten from another Gmail account. The email I use here is my school email, which I have forwarded to my Gmail account. I also reported those messages as spam so hopefully those will go into my spam box if I get another one from a different email address. Guess I made the mistake of checking the display email box on my profile  . Fixed that now.

Another possibility of what happened is that a couple of days ago I accessed the forum on a school computer. It is highly probable that IE was hijacked on that computer. I tend to use the computer labs that get little use to avoid that problem. My solution, I believe I can install Firefox to my account so I can use it on any computer I log in to. Haven't seen it done, but I think I can make it work with some tweaks.

I get spam in email boxes that I don't even use. Web-bots find them I reckon.

I do not have my email in my profile either. However, the email service I use, I have never, not once, gotten one spam email. It is the most amazing thing. Been using it for about 3 years now.

I still use my hotmail account for a few reasons, which is jammed with spam everyday.

Could you please tell me which email service you use? I pickup my MSN mail through Outlook Express and I get a lot of junk.

The default email I got with my account with PacBell, then SBC, now AT&T has never been given out and have never used it. It gets about ten spam emails a day. The spam really increased when AT&T took over.
Since I never use it, I took it off my Outlook Express email accounts list. Let AT&T deal with it.

Exactly. I get ~10 spam emails a day to my Comcast.net account that I have never, ever used for anything other than contacting Comcast support.

"I'll have your spam. I love it! I'm having spam spam spam spam spam spam spam baked beans spam spam spam and spam!" (Just had to say it...)

@Purcy:
I only use two personal emails: Yahoo and AOL. Have had both for years and I don't want to give them up despite the number of spam I get in each. Yahoo typically sees about 25-40 pieces a day; AOL about a 10-15 a week. I've setup a couple of Yahoo email filters but I rely mostly on whatever Yahoo has deemed to be junk. I quickly scan the subject lines of the messages before purging the Trash folder. Sometimes I get "Hey" or "Hi" message in my Inbox but I always delete them un-read as I figure if it's important enough, the sender should have composed a literate and to-the-point subject line. (Sorry to the people who may have tried contacting me and I didn't respond :) ) Since I own a couple of domain names, there's mail systems that came along "free". I don't use them except to forward any incoming message to those domains back to my Yahoo or AOL account.

As far as sending email using web links, I have Thunderbird associated with that action. It's been setup to use my default DSL outgoing mail account with PacBell. No, wait... Yahoo. Uh, that's not right either... <looks at ronbo613's post> Okay, SBC, then SBC/Yahoo and now AT&T/Yahoo (I think) mail servers. And like him, I have never used that mail address to receive anything.

edit: Corrected typo, "beaked"? Sorry :)

Whoa, I sort of got dizzy reading this

....... and what the heck are beaked beans??

My MSN browser through Verizon has a wonderful spam filter, I never get any junk using that mail service, BUT I hate the MSN browser; I use Firefox and Outlook Express to download my Hotmail account (MSN) and Outlook has not filters that I can find - and to think of it, that is archaic!!

If you go to AIM.com, you can make a screen name, and an email account goes with it. It is a nice interface as well.

To my knowledge, I have NEVER gotten a spam email relating to this site. Though I did get a spam email addressed to me, but I did get one that referenced Kyocera's old email address.

I didn\'t even bother to read mails in my hotmail and gmail account unless it is from my someone i knew here. But usually people from here who wanted to sent me a mail would rather use the PM instead.

Have spam mails topic ranging from:

~Dear reader, you have won a rolex watch
~You have won lottery $$$
~You have won a free laptop

And all the cork and bull story about how poor their family is and demanded 1 million dollars from me to help them. And if i don\'t help them, they claimed that bad karma will befall on me and my family.

And most of the mails are junk telling me that i have a new PM or someone has replied my thread...

School email account is for my school use, gmail is for applying a new software license or sign up as a new member in other forums. So far, i did only reply BillMorrow\'s mails and some members mails. Those luckers whom i don\'t know especially people who loved to use silly email account ID to send me mails will NOT get any response from me.

I have received mails in my hotmail account from some members here asking me about the supervisor password warez and cracks. (I don\'t reply to these mails too!)

Don\'t believe, see for yourself: http://img120.imageshack.us/img120/1830 ... d01yn4.gif

If you hate the MSN browser, why use it?

Just set OE to download your mail from the Verizon.net server.

As to removing SPAM, I've used Mailwasher for years. I happen to use the "Pro" paid version, but the basic version is a freebie!

Hi James, No I don't use the MSN browser, I only use Firefox and I was looking for something other than Outlook Express to grab my mail, since OE doesn't seem to have any junk filters that I can find. Sorry if I didn't make that clear :(

If you're after junk filters, Mozilla's Thunderbird has an excellent built-in system. It's the perfect mate for Firefox.
It's very similar in use to Outlook Express, but is a lot less prone to attract virus-infections etc. Been using it for years now.
Highly recommended.

When you install it, it automatically transfers all your stuff from OE.
You only need to enter your password for incoming and outgoing mail once, then let Tbird remember it for future use.

Hello Realblackstuff - thanks for that suggestion. I downloaded Thunderbird a couple of years ago, but unfortunately it will not work with internet mail, which MSN is, just IMAP and POP3. I agree it looked like a neat app.

Spam

#26 Post by anthean » Wed Mar 21, 2007 8:29 pm

Back when I had a Hotmail account, it used to fill up with spam. At my current ISP (3 years now), the only "spam" I get is stuff I was foolish enough to sign up for.

Actually, much of the TechRepublic stuff I get is pretty good, but I often have neither the time nor inclination to read it.
