Anyone owns a HP nc2400?

My labmate is thinking of getting one of these (he has an X31). Does anyone here one? What is your opinion?

I think that HP has a winner with this particular laptop. It looks great and the reviews are fantastic all round. Best part is that is that it is a 12" widescreen and comes with an optical drive at < 3 lbs - and trackpoint too!

One caveat is that there is only a single memory slot so a 2 GB configuration is quite expensive and 3 GB is impossible.

Oh, and ULV processors and 4200 rpm drives only, but that may all be OK for your friend's needs ...

Tom, that link was for a core solo config - it does come with a core duo configuration and seems to be a nice machine for its price overall ... agree battery life is not as good as the X60, but thr X60 is in a compeltely different league isn't it?

I did tell my labamte about the X60 that someone is there in the marketplace ... but this laptop is going as a gift to someone else and therefore needs to be new.

The nc2400 has been on my wishlist for a while, and the only other laptop that's also on the list is the Panasonic Y5. Yes, the nc2400 has a slow 1.8" HDD, but I would still prefer using it to any Thinkpad currently available because the nc2400 has a WXGA screen (30% more pixels than an X-series screen) and an internal optical drive, and weighs only 2.8 lbs with the small (3-cell?) battery. And it's fairly cheap, about $900 on eBay.

Gator, what's your field of study? Biology?

I like that laptop. Might buy one used, but not new. The next new laptop I want to buy is a T60 widescreen.
I have finally rejoined the dark side.

Completely different league -- as far as price goes, yes, definitely. The nc2400 costs 40-50% more than a comparable X60/X60s (prices from hp.com and lenovo.com).

Otherwise ... nc2400 has a WSXGA screen (big deal for some people, not for others) and an optical drive (ditto). On the other hand, the X60/X60s can be had with faster CPUs and faster disks, has two memory slots and has the option of the lovely ultralight LCD.

You pays your money and you makes your choice. :)

There's the problem Tom, most of us do it the other way!

Generally, I think hp has a very poor battery performance and the worst thing is, it gets bad very soon. My co-worker owned a hp notebook and she had to change the battery twice a year.

You base your opinion of all HP batteries on one model of notebook owned by one person?

That is like saying ThinkPads are junk because the I series wasn't so great!
