good soldering iron for fixing motherboard?
good soldering iron for fixing motherboard?
Any Engineer there?
I am looking for a soldering iron for fixing motherboard. I think I need a fine tip for this purpose. Is there any other requirement for this purpose?

Depending upon what you intend to do, you probably need something like a variable-control soldering station such as a Weller or Hakko. Equipped with a very fine tip (and good eyes) you can at least repair some of the components (chip resistors, capacitors, some of the smaller ICs). These types of soldering stations usually run around $100. Not cheap, but they are very effective when dealing with small surface mount parts. If you are considering working on any IC that has more than 8 or 10 leads, then you'll need something more specialized (and expensive); a hot-air reflow soldering station.

After reading this thread, in my apartment I found the solder gun with temperature control that I brought over a long time ago. It never got a chance to be used as I switched major from EE to CS

Hey, rkawakami, thank you very much. I am glad I asked.
I plan to fix some broken leads of small chips. So I guess a Weller or Hakko will do. This is totally a hobby. Sometime, my friends will bring over some motherboard with burned chips---most often a few broken leads. It is a waste to just dump them.

Gator, how do you know Hattori Hanso? I just searched wikipedia about this item. Nice article. Nice to know some history.
