The quintessential ThinkPad model is... ?

#1 Post by K. Eng » Sun Mar 25, 2007 4:52 pm

I'm still looking to pick up a used ThinkPad sometime. If there is one model that immediately comes to mind when the word ThinkPad is spoken, what is it?

I was thinking about a used X31 series. This model is old enough that it shouldn't be too hard to find a used one, but still has relatively modern features (WiFi capability, Pentium M processor).
Homebuilt PC: AMD Athlon XP (Barton) @ 1.47 GHz; nForce2 Ultra; 1GB RAM; 80GB HDD @ 7200RPM; ATI Radeon 9600; Integrated everything else!

I would say there no longer is a "quintessential" model. I was attached to my old T23 because of its ultimately best 2-spindle form factor. But it is too old now.

Likewise, I was attached to my TP 240 because it was one of the best 1-spindle form factor machines. But it is too old now.

And now I have become attached to my T41 because it does everything I need and is very reliable. But it does not support Vista very well.

So there will be a new machine to become attached to sometime soon. ... JDH

For me...the first one that comes to mind is the 600E. I can take them apart in my sleep....or so it feels. They are very easy to work on. This would also cover the 600X which can handle a faster processor, if you are looking at trying to keep up with the pack.

Ditto, although the 600X is the one that most often comes to the fore in my mind.

When I should think of "the" ThinkPad it would be a T-Series.(20-40)
Preferably with that "Angle" to both sides of Screen.
I just havent been around long enough to know anything older.

By the Way, what model is the one in the thinkpads.com logo?
I think that would do.
T43p, 2668PEG, 2,13GHz, 14.1" SXGA+, 2Gb Ram, 160Gb 5200rpm
701C, 75Mhz, 40Mb Ram, 580 HDD || 701CS, 75Mhz, 8Mb Ram, 340Mb HDD || Transnote || WIP; R52p(?), 2GHz, 15" QXGA, 1.5GB Ram

Wow, I'd never have guessed.

But doesn't it resemble the ThinkPad its currently runing on?

I seem to remember it looked slightly different in every Model I picked up and shook around at that IBM-Business-Partner.

Look at the bevel on the side on the thinkpads.com logo ThinkPad. Also look at the fact it has track pad and track point. Next look at placement of the line in and out ports. It's a T30.

As far as the ThinkPad that hits my mind when I hear the word "ThinkPad," I'd have to say it's the 600 series. Those things were so popular that even today, they're everywhere.
ThinkPad T60: 2GHZ CD T2500, 3gb RAM, 14.1" XGA, 60gb 7k100, Win 7 Ult
