Flash Memory Hard Drives Hitting Critical Mass

#1 Post by w0qj » Wed Mar 28, 2007 12:27 pm

Seems that Flash Memory hard drive replacements are hitting critical mass, prices dropping, capacities doubling at an ever faster rate, now 64 GB max.

Flash Memory drives MUCH faster than any 7200 RPM hard drive, and it does not lose its memory contents if your battery is drained out.

A 100G flash memory hard drive would sure be nice for a laptop, wouldn't it?
One thing though, as an owner of many flash memory cards for digital SLR cameras and even some higher end HD video cameras, these things fail just like every other electronic component and have a limited lifespan.

In fact those are not really that fast (transfer rate point of view) bu they do indeed offer excellent access time and lower power (and no noise).

I mean, if you need to transfer quantities of data, it's of no help (more expensive also, and less capacity). These are the only drawbacks IMO.

And for mobile computers, a little more durable, less susceptible to impact and shock.

But I just love the sound of the arm swinging across the discs rearranging the magnetic bits! :P
