How may processes do you have at idle?

#1 Post by BlueDevilTide » Wed Apr 11, 2007 8:33 am

Just wondering how bloated I am compared to some of you other users!

After startup, with my security features loaded and some Thinkpad software running, I have about 39 processes running. Once I get AIM and Yahoo Widget Engine up, it's about 46, taking about 350mb of RAM based on Task Manager.

On my portable, work-oriented X30, it hovers around 40 and rarely goes higher than that, and uses about 340MB. Idle has around 35 or so.

How about you guys?

My Thinkpad has about 30 processes running at startup while my desktop only has 20 or less. If I strip XP down to the bones of what I need, I can get it down to 15 processes and about 80MB of RAM used.
I have finally rejoined the dark side.

I have 94 processes running (all idle or sleeping), but 48 of these are kernel threads that service interrupts, I/O ports, acpi methods and various kernel stuff (idle, swapper, g_event, kqueue, ktrace, pagedaemon, vmdaemon, pagezero, bufdaemon, vnlru, syncer, softdepflush, schedcpu). Then, there's 8 gettys (as if I needed more than two) and 10 daemons. Processes running for my own ID only make up 24 processes. That leaves four processes unaccounted for, and I'm too confused to figure those out :D

Different users have different usage patterns. Higher number of processes does not necessarily mean the system is more bloated :)

X60s and T42 here. Both have around 25-28 processes at idle. Both have Windows XP fresh install.

Additionally, processes are usually benign, using memory (anyone remember Terminate and Stay Resident??) but not CPU. I commonly have 80 or more processes running, my system is in NO way bloated, and my CPU runs at less than 2 percent 95 percent of the time. ... JDH
