Summer Interns/What do you do for a living?

#1 Post by BlueDevilTide » Mon Apr 16, 2007 6:10 am

I know a lot of you work with some large, some not so large companies and corporations. I am trying to get a crack into the business world. To be quite honest, I find myself struggling at school and despite my hard work, it isn't paying off with the grades. I really think my skills are best suited in the real-life world of business...cutting my teeth with the real people out there and learning from the pros.

With that said, do any of you know if your company is still looking for interns this summer? Particularly in a business analyst-type position? I really would be interested in any kind of work with a solid firm..from helping the staff to filing papers, to more advanced work if its deemed necessary. And I'm certainly willing to learn any and everything I can to perform my duties at optimal levels.

Anyhow, at the very least, I'd be interested in hearing what some of you do for a living. I am unsure of my career path (ex-premed) and really want to see what's out there...even if it's just hearing about it.

And, seeing as we all have one passion in common--thinkpads, or, mobile computing--perhaps other interests/skills may intersect as well. If you'd feel more comfortable as a PM, I'd be honored to hear anything you have to say.

Many thanks! And best of luck in all work-related endeavors.

Well, I can't help you with your internship wishes, but I'm happy to do the "where do you work" thing :)

I work in the construction industry as a steel reinforcing estimator and scheduler. Basically what my job entails is interpreting engineering plans and figuring out how much steel a builder needs in the slabs/columns/beams that they're constructing. I've been there for a month and it's an interesting job - I've mainly worked on houses and smaller commercial projects (the company I work for is an Australian company with a few offices around the country; the office I work at is one of the smaller ones and thus gets smaller and less complex jobs).

How does my job relate with IBM? Well, I type on an IBM keyboard (not a model M, but still a fine peripheral) and all the monitors are 17" ThinkVision LCDs. There's some sort of deal that the company has with Lenovo, so I've seen a fair few T4x's around my tours of the offices to meet people :)
