Abundance of Forum members in Pennsylvania?

#1 Post by RealBlackStuff » Mon May 14, 2007 6:23 am

I've noticed that a lot of frequent posters are living in Pennsylvania.
We will be moving from Ireland to the Lackawanna area (near Scranton/Wilkes-Barre) at the end of August 2007.

Out of curiosity: is it coincidence, or why did so many of you pick that PA state?

Is there a geographical overview available of how many members live in which state?

And you also have some members who have lived in PA, but are now elsewhere (ok, just a few months in Franklin, but still :P )

I believe you're noticing the result of university choice rather than state choice.

Given the wealth of world-class schools in the state, especially medical schools, there is an artificial appearance that the Forum has a surplus of PA residents.

Being from NY, I believe PA people maybe just talk more and have more opiniions. I have noticed that too, but living in PA I didn't pay attention. But thanks for noticing...............

Are you saying I talk too much Ron?? I personally was born in Pittsburgh, but I've seen my fair share of states, and I personally like the division of seasons found so abundantly in PA; I'm a nature girl and I love a lot of trees.

I never noticed the abundance you speak of...

But more power to us. The people that talk a lot are from The Great Northeast.

Does it count if we have a cottage on Harveys Lake but live in Jersey?

I'm afraid that what immediately comes to mind when I think of NE PA is retirees!

I ran up yesterday to visit my Mom in the home in Pittston, but I also have two out of three sisters who have chosen to retire up there.

that's a nice area and you will be ultra close to Rt.80 there, a very short distance to New York City via the George Washington Bridge. Good move.

Living in Hallstead/Great Bend, which is 50 miles north of Scranton, we usually take 81 to 380 to 80 to GW bridge to Queens to visit my wifes sister. Nice drive and it saves us almost an hour drive.............

Excellent choice.
Ron

Ah, leave it to Steve to put this conversation into a downer...

My best recollection about PA is Hershey! The factory tour was interesting and the freebies at the end sure made an impression on the kids (me included).

Hey girls and guys, thanks for the heads up about our PA choice!
Any time I visited that area before, I noticed the really friendly attitude of the locals.
I like proper seasons as well, although they are a bit 'late' this year.
And coming with Euros to buy a Dollar priced house, has greatly improved our choices for a new hovel.

I'm fine with the deer dying, two less I've gotta worry about. And frankly, maybe the deer was trying to do you a favor, with the Cavalier and all.

I like how there used to be a time of year to watch out for deer in the woods (Nov-Dec)...but now it doesn't matter where you are, or what time of year. Time to get my hunting license.

The common white-tailed deer should be classified as a vermin on the east coast with an open and unlimited season!

Don't recall seeing that many deer in PA when we were there about 10 years ago (mobile variety as well as the stationary ones). Did all of the driving during daylight hours so maybe that's the reason-are deers nocturnal there?. Used the same reasoning when driving in Australia; rental cars didn't have 'roo bars on them. Saw MANY roadside examples of what happens when a ton of rolling steel meets up with nature. Do many people in PA have 'eer bars?

No, they have ineffectual deer whistles.

Yes, deer are relatively nocturnal, they normally feed at dusk and dawn. Hence, one tends to spotlight them in the headlights where they immediately freeze.

A drive across the state on I-80 will net you a carcass sighting at least every ten miles or so. The turnpike would be awash in them if they didn't have fencing along the entire route, but they still get a fair number annually.

Ray,

I can't say about 'eer bars, but we do have our fair share of just plain old bars! I couldn't help it, sorry

Sad but true, for the past 10 years they have been way out of control, with their natural predators gone; bring back the wolves!! But extended or full time hunting seasons would be a better control for a few years. It is really not just the deer though, too many ecosystems are scarily out of control.

Purcy's Geo is 'only' 12 years old.
My Nissan Sunny is from 1989 and has 'already' 103.500 KM / 64.700 Miles on the clock.
It's a shame having to leave it behind, it still passes every test without fail.

At least this thread is in the right forum, the way it has deviated off topic....

Wow. I discharged my 1989 Volvo sedan in 2005. It had well over 400,000Km on the clock. It still ran tolerably well when I let it go. My ""new"" 1995 Volvo sedan had 140,00Km on it when new to me in 2005 and has 190,000Km on it now. ... JDH
