cant copy videos from my camera to my laptop - size restrict

#1 Post by liquidous » Thu May 24, 2007 2:53 pm

have a canon SD630, nice cam.

took some videos, some movies are 200 + megs, one is 698, and another is almost 1 gig... i can't seem to copy these larger ones to my laptop. anyone know why? is it because of file fat size restriction? anyone know of software that can break these things apart? or take raw video and compress into something more manageable. i have these videos on a 2 gig SD card and if i can't get it to a computer, ill have to delete, and these are important videos.
thanks in advanced

if i had the new T61P i know it would work. :P (still dreaming)

What file format are the videos? (.mov, .mpeg, .avi)

mvi from the camera is the file name. but DOS says AVI file!

windows starts to copy the large files then it craps out without error, just goes away, files remain on the sd card.

other weird thing is, when i had a 512mb sd card, and put the sd card in the card reader, my laptop(s) would see the drive, and i could search the folder, but now it sees the drive ok, but when i click on it, it says "drive is not formatted".. but i can view the files on the camera, and when i use usb cable, i can see the files on the computer in the folder, just can't get it off the old fashioned way.

maybe i need to reformat it. would love to get these two movies off first tho. my lappy is ntfs.

Did you try using it on another computer? I had a friend who had the very same issue, and somehow the drive was recognized on another computer and he was able to copy the files - he had huge files just like you.

How do you move the files from the card on the reader to your laptop? I also take videos (.mpeg) and use a 2GB SD card and a card reader. When I hook up the card reader, the window opens showing the files on the card. I then click on FOLDERS on the toolbar and all the folders on my computer come up. I find MY VIDEO folder in MY DOCUMENTS, then I just higlight the video files by holding the right button of the mouse, then drag them into the MY VIDEO file that is showing along the left of the screen. Is this how you transfer your files.

Another way, is just to drag and drop the video files right off the folder page of the card reader and drop them onto your desktop of the laptop; if that works, then you can always put them into a folder somewhere. If you have a CD burner, you can also try burning the files right from the SD card onto a CD. As soon as you get the files off the SD card though, re-format it.

Good luck

only thing i haven't tried is from the Camera right to a DVD. ill try that right now.

but ive tried to drag it to desktop, and other folders, no luck. i am able to get pictures and other smaller movies off of it, but the big ones i can not.

i have tried connecting the camera via usb cable and no luck, and also removing the sd card and putting it into the integrated sd card reader on my laptop, and when i do it particularly this way, the computer says its not formatted. weirdo!

Oh, I thought you had a stand alone card reader; I have a SanDisk card reader which has a USB end. Yes, we also have gone from camera straight to our DVD recorder via RCA cables, worked great.

just tried from the camera usb cable to the DVD 4gb cd.

said windows encountered a problem retry, then it keeps looping.

theres gotta be a windows file size restriction or something weird.

im not sure how im gonna get these files off my card now. :(

Where did you get that SD card? The symptoms you mentioned indicating it might be a firmware-altered card. Have you tried moving similar-sized file from different SD card to your computer by using the same camera/cardreader?

This is a real wild shot but when you have the card in the computer can you open the video file and play it, like in Windows Media Player? If so, you can possibly save the file to your WMP library.

I guess you don't have a stand alone DVD recorder/player? We have one that we hook up to our TV to record shows, but you can also input with cables your camera and record what is on the camera to a DVD. Good luck to you.

Found this: http://www.personal-computer-tutor.com/ ... /vic31.htm
Probably it applies to .mvi as well. Worth a shot!

Thanks Purcy, I aim to please...

To the OP, perhaps you should try and switch off Thumbs.
* In “Explorer” click on the “Tools” menu item
* Click on “Folder Options”, and the folder options dialog will appear
* Click on the “View” tab
* Check the “Do not cache thumbnails” option

I suspect you will find the cause of your problem in the following webpage:

tried everything here, still doesn't work.

its gotta be the laptop not supporting my card.
my last ibm thinkpad t60p supported my usb cable to camera and transferred everything, every time. but even this laptop will not transfer using the usb cable, these largeer movies (600meg - 1 gig movies)

thanks everyone for your diligence and help. i learned a lot :)
